CARL MEADE - Class of '68

Hi Gloria,
Here are a couple pictures for your use. The two pictures on the left side show my crewmate, Mark Lee, attached to the orbiter's robot arm. I am flying back toward him (positioned over the tail) while performing one of the flight test maneuvers called "mission suitability." Top right picture shows me performing another part of the test flight called "handling qualities." The bottom right picture shows Mark flying towards the refueling station (i.e. 17000 mph flying gas station) while I work on some electrical and plumbing connections next to the orbiter's thermal radiators.

Take care, As for 'what's up with me and mine' -- attached is also a picture of my three boys and son number 1's fiancée. Yes, 20 years between son number 1 and son number 3 with son number 2 in the middle at 6 yrs old. (I've now figured out how this stuff happens!) So, trying to keep up with these guys keeps me off the street.

Here's a picture of my wife, Celyna, and sons Jacob (age six yrs) and Michael (age 6 wks).
Number one son is named David and his fiancée is Anna--(we're lucky, she's great!) We've moved from Palmdale to Santa Clarita (both in the southern CA area) after I left the Lockheed Skunk Works for Northrop Grumman. (yes, still working--is there ever an end?) And finally, no clarinet lately--although my dad thought I should work my way through astronaut school playing the clarinet!

Hope all is well with you, Carl carl.meade@ngc.com

GAIL STEED McILHANY - Class of '64

10/22/07

Dear Gloria,

It was great getting your message. How are you doing? I'm sure you're enjoying being back in the RHS area.

Our son, Charles, got married in 2004 to a wonderful lady named Nadia. We also got an instant grandson--Nadia's son, Joe. He's now 23 and he and Charles are best friends.

Mac and I just got back from a 42nd Anniversary trip to Biloxi, MS and New Orleans, LA. We were there 3 years ago and loved it. We weren't sure how it would be after Katrina. There's still a lot of damage but they're moving onward. We had great weather and really enjoyed ourselves.

Any thoughts on a reunion? I wonder how many would come for a 50th Reunion?! I haven't been in San Antonio since the last reunion. Mac and I had a lot of fun there.

Mac is planning his retirement. It looks like it will be late 2008 or early 2009. We want to sell our house here and move to the Blacksburg, VA area. Charles and Nadia have been talking to us about building a house together there. We'd live in it and they'd have a place to stay when they come up for VA Tech games (Charles is a VA Tech alumnus). They want to retire there in about 20 years. :) I don't know if it will work out but we're in the talking stage.

We're all still trying to get over the shootings at VA Tech last spring. Charles was really stunned. He started out an Engineering major and had a lot of classes in Norris Hall. He absolutely loves VA Tech and is still trying to deal with what happened. He has season tickets for football games and the first game this year was very emotional.

I only have a few photos of myself and/or with Mac and Charles. We're planning on going to Charles and Nadia's for Thanksgiving. Nadia is an attorney but also a budding professional photographer. So, there should be a lot of pictures from that. I'll send you some photos when I have them. If you want, I can send one or two from Charles and Nadia's wedding. I look the same but I have my hair up in the wedding photos.

I thought I'd send this photo to you. It's of Mac and me at Charles (my son) and Nadia's wedding reception taken on May 15, 2004. They were married at the Chapel of University of Maryland, College Park, MD. Nadia is a MD grad.

Take care and thanks so much for doing the blog. I've looked at some of it and I'm very impressed! Take care.

Take care and thanks for everything.

Lots of love, Gail

John Lieberman '66 - Autocrossing

9/20/07
We don't call it "racing" because that doesn't set too well with the insurance companies -- you can do it with the same car you drive to work or school every day! 8<{) We call it "autocrossing." The SCCA calls it "Solo." But, yes, I will be competing. In my case, I drive a purpose-built 1965 Austin Mini that lives on a trailer when it's not in action. You can see some pictures of it here: http://miniownersoftexas.org/old/mini.html It amounts to finding a large parking lot or unused airport -- laying out a miniature road course using orange traffic cones -- then driving through that course just as fast as you can without hitting any cones (a two-second penalty for each cone you hit) or missing any gates (that's a DNF -- you Did Not Finish the course the way it was intended to be run, so your time doesn't count.) We run one car at a time against the clock -- but we usually have two or three cars on the course at a time -- spaced far enough apart that there's no chance of one car overtaking another. It's basically the same thing that law enforcement officers do when they're going through their driver training except that we do it competitively and with sophisticated timing gear. To us, it's an exercise in precision driving and makes you a much better driver when you're on the street. You only compete against other cars in your same class -- cars that should be just about equal to yours in terms of performance. Winning times are often decided by thousandths of a second.Next week's event is the national championship -- bringing together the top SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) autocrossers in the country and any other SCCA members who care to attend. I fall into that latter group! 8<{) I've been there seven times in the past ten years. I've never finished better than second or third out of last place -- but I sure had a blast doing it.I WILL take my camera, but I'll have to find somebody else to take pictures when I'm on-course. John jlieberman@sport.rr.com

10/8/07
I friend of mine in California took about 2000 -- hopefully, a lot of my car since his wife co-drove it! As soon as he gets them all downloaded, he's going to send me some of my car in action.BTW -- I didn't do worth a poop. I had major ignition problems the first day and couldn't make up the deficit on the second. So I wound up 8th out of 9 cars. If it had run right both days, I would have been 5th or 6th.If you'll go to this link: http://www.scca.com/event.aspx?hub=3&event=5632 you can see an aerial view of the huge asphalt pad at Heartland Park Topeka. That picture was taken last year -- at the '06 Solo Nationals. It's hard to conceive an expanse of perfectly flat, unobstructed asphalt that's big enough to run two 50-second courses on simultaneously. Most of the time we had six cars running -- three on each course -- one just starting, another just finishing, and a third about mid-way through. It was a hoot! John

10/12/07 As promised, here's a picture from Topeka and a little blurb about my trip

HOW I SPENT MY SUMMER VACATION

The last week in September, I hitched up the Mighty Mini to my Fraud pick-em-up and headed north for my almost-annual pilgrimage to Topeka, KS. I left Shreveport before dawn on Sunday the 23rd and, ten hours later, I was pulling into Heartland Park Topeka to spend the week with 1150 of my closest friends. No, you didn't mis-read that -- the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) Solo Nationals is the largest competitive motorsports event in the country and traditionally draws over 1100 drivers from all over the US and parts of Canada. We can actually handle as many as 1250. Over a four-day period, each driver gets three one-minute runs on each of two courses. The best times from each course are then added together to determine the winners (and National Champions) in each of 72 classes. You basically have one car starting each course every 20-seconds with the first car tripping the lights at eight in the morning and everything wrapped up for the day by four in the afternoon. IT'S INTENSE!!!By now, you're probably asking yourself, "What in the heck is he talking about?" Let me explain. What the SCCA calls "Solo" is more commonly known today as "autocrossing." It amounts to one car at a time trying to negotiate a miniature road course laid out with orange traffic cones on a big expanse of asphalt or concrete. You run against the clock -- just as fast as you can. If you hit any of the cones, that's a two-second penalty for each cone hit. If you miss any of the gates, that's a DNF (you Did Not Finish the course as it was designed to be run) and your time doesn't count. Class winners -- especially at the national level -- are often decided by thousandths of a second. Back in our High School and College days, it was called Gymkhana or Slalom. Gloria knows what I'm talking about. She used to do it. And I imagine that others of you have done it, too, or at least watched somebody else do it. I've been doing it on a regular basis for the past 22 years, though I actually ran my first one with my Corvair on the old Spartan-Atlantic parking lot on Loop 410 back in '67 or '68.I spent all day Monday walking both courses several times -- to get familiar with them -- and getting my car tech-inspected to make sure it was legal. I ran the West course on Tuesday and the East course on Wednesday. Then I spent Thursday and Friday writing other classes for SportsCar Magazine (the official SCCA publication) and North American Pylon (a west coast publication dedicated strictly to autocrossing.)So...how'd I do? Not very good, I'm afraid. 8<{( There were nine cars in my class. On Tuesday, my ignition went flat and I couldn't get the little beast over 4500 rpm. And, with only 10 or 15 minutes between runs, there wasn't much time to work on it. At the end of the day, I was sitting dead last. I thrashed on it the rest of the afternoon and into the evening -- after making a couple of trips to O'Reilly's -- and finally got it running right. But I'd lost so much time on Tuesday that there was no way I could make it up on Wednesday. I was only able to pick up one position and finished eighth. IF the car had run right on the first day, I would have finished sixth -- maybe even fifth -- against the best autocross drivers in the country in my class (G-Prepared) which is made up entirely of vintage 60s and 70s British and Italian sports cars.Did I have fun? You betcha! Am I going back next year? Count on it! Will I win? Probably not, but I'm sure going to have fun trying! You're never too old to have a second childhood!!! 8<{)John

Mr. Porter - Math Teacher

This is Mr. Marvin Porter. He taught at RHS for many, many years. I took geometry and algebra from him. I didn't do too well. I know we will all remember what he used to call us when he would get frustrated with us... remember? NEENO-NINOS, right??? I spoke with Mr. Porter the other day right before John's funeral.... he said he had had surgery and couldn't get out of the house for a few more weeks. He remembers all of us and teaching like it was yesterday and tells some of the funniest stories of his time at RHS. Wouldn't it be great for him to receive a few notes from us?? Get well cards? AND, birthday cards because he will be 82 years old on November 22nd. I think it would be wonderful if you could find the time to send him a note to let him know that you are thinking of him or call him and cheer him up. OK? Do it!!! Love you guys, Gloria

October, 2007
Gloria, I know I cannot possibly catch up on the last 40 years but I want to thank you for staying in touch with many of our classmates. I don’t know how you find the time – you are amazing!!

I have 3 grandchildren – Berit, almost 3; Gunnar 18 months and Emma 18 months. I wanted to share their pictures because I always LOVE seeing pictures.

We are still in Austin; Ron retired in 1994; my children graduated from college in this area; Dawn received her Masters from Southwest [now it has another name of course] and Richard from UT with his degree in Business and then off to fly in the military for 9 years – he is now an airline pilot living in Austin with his wife and 2 children. Dawn and husband Curtis live in San Antonio with their daughter Emma. Need I say more !!! My life is spent with my kids and the babies. I LOVE every minute of our time together. Ron is amazing with the little ones and all is well. My Dad died in 2004 and my mother moved to Dallas in 2005. She is doing great. My siblings all live in Dallas: Patty, Carol, Jeanne and Rick. There are too many of us to talk about but I have to say we have all been blessed with wonderful lives and families. Hope all is well with you and yours.

We took the family to Aruba Thanksgiving of 2006 – traveling with 3 babies was quite an experience – they were very good and it was a great trip. Now that you have me started on pictures I will share a few more!!@## One is my daughter Dawn and her daughter Emma. The other is my son and his wife deep sea fishing -

I have included a picture of my crew – this was taken the Fall of 2006 –

I love your BLOG – I had no idea that Patti Tyler, Gilda Carney, John Stamply, Joanna Dyas or John Hartig had passed away. That makes me very sad. I will call my mom tonight and let her know. She was great friends with the Stamplys – they lived across the street from us for many years.

I love the pictures of the 1966 crew [my class] – I remember everybody like it was yesterday!

We own a summer home on an Island in Wisconsin – Ron spends many months of the year up there fishing, golfing, hunting etc. I have also included a picture of the view from our front yard up there – with my daughter and husband in the picture.

This is Ron with my niece [Kathy] in Ron’s new Boston Whaler – he decided to get a new boat this year – he said “life is short” – and too many of our friends are leaving the earth …. So enjoy every day – that is what we do!!!

Kathy is my sister Patty’s daughter – Kathy and Patty are attorneys – Kathy practices law in McAllen Texas – she has 2 sons – they also come up to Washington Island during the summer – in fact – most of my family spends time up there during the summers. It is beautiful and we all enjoy being together.

My brother Rick lives on his ranch in Cleburne Texas with his wife Suzy. Their son Toby is an engineer and works in Cleburne. Their daughter Shelly is a lawyer living in Austin Texas.

As I said, BIG FAMILY – many of us to keep up with!!

JOHN HARTIG ON JOHN HARTIG 9/07

The following narrative was prepared by John Hartig to caption this picture. John's 17 year old son, Brett, suggested putting this picture on the BLOG because all the pictures of John so far show a S#&t eating grin on his face. But even in pain, John is smiling.....

"During a routine MRI to check the right side of John's brain where the golf ball size tumor was removed and radiation therapy was done, the news on the right side was pretty good. There were no immediate tumor dangers. But the MRI spotted a pea to marble sized tumor on the left side of his brain. The doctors jumped into action ordering a 'slice MRI' and setting up a surgical procedure named Gamma Knife Surgery. Brett had to drive him to the procedure. Brett had been kidding John about how much pain he's been in, yet all our pictures show him with a 's&#t' eating grin on his face. The med staff were about to take some pictures to document the procedure so Brett saw some great opportunities to get John in a much less friendly atmosphere. The cage frame work you see is part of a plexiglas cage which is bolted down to keep John's head still during the procedure. The posts you see on the front are matched by 2 more posts at about the same places on the back of John's head. The blood had just been wiped away. Each post is literally screwed into John's head. Brett was figuring we might see tears, but John had heard Brett talking to the nurses about getting a picture of John in a hurting situation. Much to Brett's dismay John somehow managed the 's&#t' eating partial grin!

Unfortunately, there has been other bad news for John since the successful Gamma Knife Surgery. They have found traces of the cancer in John's spine, lungs and left eye rendering his left eye somewhat useless at this time."

John wants to thank all of you for your notes, cards, phone calls and prayers.

CHAPLAIN RETURNS TO MINISTER TO PENTAGON AFTER 9/11

Chaplain Returns to Minister to Pentagon after 9/11
By Fred W. Baker III
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Sept. 11, 2007 – Six years ago, Army Chaplain (Col.) William Broome stared in disbelief as he ran toward a burning Pentagon from his Crystal City office to minister to those injured and the families of those who died.

Army Chaplain (Col.) William Broome stands in the memorial chapel at the Pentagon. The chaplain helped minister to victims of the terrorist attacks there and is now the Pentagon Chaplain in charge of all religion support there. Defense dept. photo by Petty Officer 2nd Class Molly A. Burgess, U.S. Navy
(Click photo for screen-resolution image);high-resolution image available.

Now, he has returned to the Pentagon to lead the chaplaincy here as the Pentagon Chaplain, responsible for all the religious support in the building.

At the time of the attacks, Broome was one of many displaced to other area office spaces because of renovations to the Pentagon. Had it been complete, he may have been one of the victims.

An avid motorcyclist, Broome rode in that day admiring the beauty of the morning. At the office, as the assignment officer for chaplains working for the Chief of Chaplains, he set about a routine of checking emails and returning phone calls. Broome’s wife and daughter were scheduled to tour the Pentagon that day.

They first heard of the attacks in New York City, and turned on the office television.

“The thought that this was an act of terrorism never crossed my mind. I just prayed, feeling sorrow for the people trapped inside. Then in helpless bewilderment and revulsion, we watched the second jet crashed into the second tower. We knew immediately that this must be terrorism,” he later wrote for a chaplain’s magazine.

Minutes later news flashed across the screen that the Pentagon had been hit by a jet. Knowing his services would be needed, Broome took off toward the crash site with a handful of fellow chaplains.

“We ran most of the way and were going against the crowd as most were leaving and evacuating the building. We were stopped by security and secret service, but explained that as chaplains we needed to be there to minister to the crowds,” Broome said.

The chaplain called the scene “surreal” and said it was hard to comprehend an attack on the Pentagon.

“As we turned the corner to the crash site, we saw the wreckage of the plane, clothes, and such all over the place – flames coming out of the building, people running, some standing, some crying, most trying to help. We got there just as the wall collapsed, which caused a loud cry to go out in the crowd,” he said.

Broome joined a group that tried to reenter the building with firemen, but the flames prevented their entrance. He said the feeling of helplessness was “truly demoralizing.”

That day was the first of many that Broome and a team of chaplains would work long into the night working with families.

A Joint Family Assistance Center was set up at a hotel for the families of the victims. Representatives helped families with legal, medical, financial and spiritual matters. Six chaplains from the different services worked days and three chaplains worked nights. Rooms were set aside for families to sit and talk with chaplains.

Notifying the families was especially difficult.

“Because it took so long to identify all the bodies, we did some notifications months later and these were just as emotional as the ones done right away,” he said.

The chaplain said it was difficult for him that day to come to grips with the fact that “we had been attacked at home, in America,” and said the attacks serve as a reminder that there is a price for freedom.

“This told us that there was no safe place in this world when it comes to terrorism,” Broome said. “I think we all need to remember that true freedom and democracy always comes at a price and that there are those in our world who do not believe in freedom or in individual rights. Therefore, we will continue to fight for these rights for years to come.”

Broome said he still rides his motorcycle to work. On particularly pretty mornings, it now makes him think about more than the waiting morning’s schedule of meetings, emails and phone calls.

“I often think about that day as I ride my motorcycle in and especially as I look over at the crash site as I make the turn into work. I often think about the love for our country by those who are seeking freedom and the hatred by others because of those same freedoms,” Broome said.

Jerry Ball Remembers Elvis 30 years later

Friends,

If you've watched any news today, you've probably seen a mention of the thirtieth anniversary of Elvis' death. I don't know how you felt about him or his music, but I was big fan of Elvis music "back in the day" and even now I've got twenty of his CDs among the five hundred or so in my collection. This morning I picked a couple of those CDs out of the rack so that today I had Elvis on in the background all day at work and on my drive to and from.

I was a Texas A&M graduate student in 1977 and happened to be on my Air Force Reserve duty at Randolph AFB (near San Antonio) when the news about Elvis started being talked about in the halls. That evening I sat down and wrote this short note which was published in the San Antonio Light newspaper on August 22, 1977. In memory of the man and his music, I thought I'd share those thoughts of three decades ago.

Jerry

JANET with JACKIE AND MOM DARLING 8/3/2007

Heh girlfriend!

Long time between emails....but checked RoHawk site and saw why! The wedding looked wonderful and so did everyone! Know you must have had a wonderful time. Is everyone still visiting?

Anyway, wanted to share pictures from today. Mom and I finally got up to Woodland Park to Swiss Chalet to have lunch with Janet. Mom has been unable to go up so this was a special treat for Janet. We had a great time, as witnessed by the pictures! And, to crown the day, we found out that Blue Bell ice cream now had an outlet in Colorado in Woodland Park and grand opening is next Monday! They have franchised with the Donut Shop up there where skiiers and donut lovers have been coming for hundreds of years, I swear! Mom, Janet and I went over and tried to get them to give us Texas girls a taste so we could make sure it was genuine, but no such luck. Janet and I trying to figure out a way to sneak in next week!Hope all is going well your way and that you are enjoying family all being home again!

Much love,

Here are a few of the people who were at our house on July 8th.... we celebrated my birthday but most of all we celebrated our son, Mark, being home after 6 years in Okinawa and 5 months in Iraq. He surprised his wife, Chongok, with a re-proposal and a renewal of their vows. (They've been married 8 years). My father, Bill Campbell, performed the ceremony. We had most of our family at our house to share in their happiness. It was a really wonderful day and it didn't rain!!!!

JANET WATKINS JENDRON ('65) and Jimmy Ewart

Remember Jim Ewart ( jimewart@usconstrs.com) from Schertz? Well, we spent 4th of July with him. He's lived in Columbia, SC for many years. I ran into him at a Randolph Reunion years ago and knew that he lived here. One of his best friends is a retired FBI agent that Bob has known for years, so we finally all got together. Jim and I had a ball remembering different things about the two different high schools! He looks wonderful and has a wonderful family. Here are two pictures - one of Jim and me and another of Bob (my husband - below) and me. Peace, JJ jjendron@usit.net
