MOSAIC - THE RO-HAWK HAS FOUND A NEW NEST!

 

Finally, the Ro-Hawk mosaic, a gift from the Class of 1964, that originally hung in the main hallway right in the sight of those entering the high school.  The mosaic hung there for over 50 years.  During those years many changes were made to the school but the main building still stood until 2019 when it was demolished after the new high school building, cafetorium and new junior high school buildings were erected.  There is also an Arts and Science building which includes the Band Room and practice rooms and a separate building for the Jr. ROTC. Many years have come and gone but the Ro-Hawk spirit is still intact.  That said, the mosaic now hangs in the High School Building right off the main hallway by the Administration offices. It is above some couches and chairs in what is called a charging station. New lighting has been added which illuminates the mosaic.  (New picture to be added soon).  The Ro-Hawk hasn't changed and it will be FOREVER RO-HAWK!!

THE RO-HAWK MOSAIC

 The removal and hanging of the Ro-Hawk Mosaic - ALMOST!

This is the original entrance to the main hallway in the original building. The Ro-Hawk mosaic was hung on the outside of the cafeteria wall. It was a gift to the school from the Class of '64.  The Ro-Hawk should stand the test of time and be forever a representation of the Ro-Hawks everywhere.  We have had the mosaic removed from the wall and it is waiting to be rehung in the new high school building. Because this mosaic is very heavy metal it needs to be hung very carefully and on a weight bearing wall.  An engineer or contractor needs to study the situation and make sure it is done correctly. We have been promised that this will be accomplished by the new Superintendent, Dr. Holt.

This will make you cry but it was necessary. The original building was demolished and in it's place... a parking lot. Brings to mind that song

The Ro-Hawk Legacy Bricks 

A special thanks goes to Dr. Mark Malone, Principal of Randolph High School for his support of the legacy brick project. As always without Gloria Campbell Gallagher keeping Ro-Hawks contacting Ro-Hawks for 50+ years many alums wouldn’t have known a courtyard was under construction and where to buy a brick.

A special Ro-Hawk salute and THANK YOU goes out to Sarah Thompson as the legacy brick project leader, organizer, and person that made the legacy courtyard a reality - literally Brick by Brick.

During the pandemic as an RFISD parent and AFJROTC Booster Club member Sarah pressed forward with the project with the support of her family and a small team to ensure they completed the project on time with quality results. 

The AFJROTC, Band, Athletics, and PTO organizations all received a portion of the $4600 raised from the sale of the bricks

When we say Sarah and her team made the project successful brick by brick - see pictures below.

This is the Courtyard. The building in the rear is what is left of the cafeteria from the original school building. This building has been re-purposed as a conference room and all purpose area. The sidewalk there connects the High School building to the all purpose building. The courtyard is in between the buildings a bit off the new parking lot.

Maybe those flagstones will be bricks in the future!

Students and parents who were there in school last year during the COVID year were the ones to gather and place the bricks.  The outside border contains blank bricks that were in the original building.

I hope you can make out your name on these bricks.  The pictures were clear on my camera.
