GAIL STEED McILHANY, '64

June 24, 2008

Dear Gloria,

I wanted to write and let you know that Mac and I may not be able to attend the reunion in Sept. On June 9, a severe storm hit our area. Seven enormous pine trees in our neighbors yard were blown down on top of our garage and part of our house. When the storm was over, we tried to get outside to see the damage but live power lines were draped over our back door. We then tried to go out the front but the power lines were in the front yard. We called 911 and the Fire Dept. sent a truck out to help us. It took them 20 min. to get to us as they had to cut trees that were down in the street to make a path through. We then were able to get out and spent the next three nights in a hotel. I'm including three photos of some of the damage.

It took a tree service 8 days using a 5 man crew to get the trees cleared away from our property. We're waiting for estimates to submit to USAA before we can begin the repair work. So, I don't know what will be done when.

I was really hoping to come to the reunion but I just don't know if we'll need to be here getting the repairs made. Could you let me know a deadline for registering for the reunion?

I hope all is well with you. Take care.

With love, Gail Steed McIlhany Class of '64

Dear Gloria,

Just a quick update on our situation here. It's been 7 1/2 weeks since the storm and there are many things left to repair. The roofers finally repaired the roof on our house and porch a week ago today. Unfortunately, they did a bad job. The general contractor (USAA required a general contractor to handle all of the repairs) and the head of the roofing company are coming by today to see what to do to fix the roof--again. It seems that the repairs are causing us as many problems as the storm did.

Mac and I are doing OK. We're very frustrated by the length of time it's taking to get things done. Also it's been difficult to understand what USAA intends since we have to go through a local adjustor who seems indifferent to our situation. I assume eventually things will be repaired and life will get back to normal. We're still unsure how much all of this will cost us.

I hope all is well with you. Thank you for your sweet e-mail. I do appreciate the kind words, Gloria. Take care.

Lots of love, Gail
