Gloria - I can't remember what I was looking for when I stumbled upon your Ro-Hawk Blog. What a treat it has been! Your blog is full of familiar names and wonderful memories - in particular John Hines, Bill Borellis, Gary Bird, Earl Dodgion, Sue Turner, Carol Rankin and several others. John and I were pretty good friends. We both had scooters and we terrorized the innocent residents of Randolph from time to time on those scooters. Not to mention chasing jackrabbits on the scooters out by the stables - and ending up in the emergency room as a result.
I lived on the base at Randolph for just one year. I rode the bus to MacArthur High School every day of my sophomore year, 1961-62. My dad was transferred to Colorado Springs in the summer of '62. I guess Randolph High School opened its doors later that year.
My father was stationed at Randolph for four years - we lived in New Braunfels for the first three. We moved onto the base when my dad was promoted and became the commanding officer of his squadron. None of us wanted to leave New Braunfels. In fact my sister did not - she moved in with her best friend's family so that she could finish high school in New Braunfels. She later married a high school classmate who was born and raised in New Braunfels - they visit NB with some frequency.
When my father retired in 1968 he returned to New Braunfels - bought a home on the Comal River. Unfortunately, my parents lost that home in the great flood of 1972. They moved to Colorado.
A brief sketch of my days since Randolph goes like this: Graduated from high school in Colorado Springs - after college entered navy flight training - got my wings in Beeville, Texas. Got introduced to computers while in the navy and have been making my living in the computer business for over thirty years. Married for 38 years - we have two daughters - we've lived in the same house in Solana Beach, California (San Diego County) for over thirty years now.
I'm attaching a couple of pictures: One is a basketball picture from the MacArthur yearbook - it includes Bill Borellis, Gary Bird and me. The other is fairly recent - my daughter Robin and her CCI assistance dog, Selma, and me. Robin is developmentally disabled - Selma is the second Canine Companion that she has received from CCI.
It is wonderful to see a blog like yours - you have obviously put lots of loving energy into it over many years.
