RANDOLPH ROHAWK HOMECOMING 2016 - SEPTEMBER 30, 2016

RHS HOMECOMING - SEPTEMBER 30, 2016

To say I was beyond surprised Homecoming Night would be an understatement!  I was loving that so many RoHawks attended Friday night and wore their Forever Rohawk t-shirt proudly. Big Frog sold over 176 Tshirts and gave the new foundation $504!! The stands were full of Rohawks from 1963 through 2016!! The BBQ reunion went so good that plans are being tossed around to repeat it next year. The concert even made money for the new foundation.  RHS not only won the football but scored $$$ in donations for the benefit of the school for the future.

Mike Scott, who by the way, didn't even graduate a RoHawk, but spent 3 years being a RoHawk, loved the school so much and loved his friend Terry English so much that he wanted to honor him and honor the school, came up with this crazy idea!!

MIKE would have graduated in 1967 had his father not been transferred.  He contacted Lynn because he wanted to find Terry English as he wasn't aware that Terry had passed away.  Lynn told him about the last reunion and all the reunions before and that he had to meet me and that I was in New Braunfels.  So we met and we talked and I found out that he really wanted to find Terry because Terry had been his friend and mentor while he was attending Randolph.  Now that he was gone, he really wanted to do something to honor his friend.  So, he told me that he wanted to create some kind of an award that the school could hand out to a deserving student in football. Not particularly a guy that exceeded in football but someone who strived to exceed and someone who helped others along the way. Long story short Mike came up with 3 awards for the school to hand out to students at the end of the year.  Along the way and in meeting with some of the school officials, we learned that there was a new foundation being formed and we were asked to participate in that organization. We thought this would be our "in" to getting the school to listen to us and to accept Mike's idea.  The school agreed that we could introduce the awards to the Superintendent and faculty during the half-time of the Homecoming game.  We had to come up with a program that fit in with the existing half-time performances of the band and dance teams.  We were allotted a few minutes at the end of the half-time.  Members of the new foundation - Randolph Field Education Foundation (which has been described previously in this Blog) - We invited Coach Mickler's son, Bobby Mickler, RHS Class of '84 to participate as well as Terry English's sister, Lynn English Sutton - Class of '68  and Mike wanted me to give the Superintendents award.  At the end of what I thought was the end of the program, the Announcer started talking about another Award to be given out and I soon realized that he was describing me! Then I saw Mr. Bridges, Past Band Director at RHS and behind him were Toni and Dickie Buchert.  They brought on the field and presented me with a beautiful crystal vase in appreciation of my 50 years of keeping the RoHawks together.  It has been my pleasure and I didn't do this alone - you, as RoHawks who kept in contact with me kept me going! Thank YOU for keeping in touch through all these years and honoring me so many times with so much LOVE!

In the future we hope to refurbish the Mickler Plaque that is now on the field and indecipherable to a more prominent place when the new construction is done.  Also, we have been promised that the RoHawk Mosaic will be removed and refurbished and placed in a prominent place in the new school building or the new Gym.  Mike Scott and I will keep you posted on the progress of these projects.  Mike and I promise that we will keep in touch with the school and make sure these things get done.

Here are some pictures of Homecoming September 30, 2016.  I didn't know some of the names to add to the captions so please forgive me for that, but you can add a comment to the bottom of this post and tell me which picture you were in and I will add your name.

Thank you and FOREVER ROHAWK!!

I disagree with the caption about an "ugly cry". I thought the tears were poignant and perfect - just like the event itself.

Gloria, my dear,
I was so thrilled to learn that you had received the beautiful commemorative vase at the recent reunion.  Nothing, however, can repay you for all you have done to keep the "forever Rohawks"  togetherr.  Just think-- for more than 50 years you have seen that we have remained close. Throughout those early RHS years   you kids were special to me  and because of you that feeling has remained .
Whoever designed the vase did a masterful job.  I hope to see it some day.
On another topic, it was great to share in all of your recent travels.  I'm so glad you've been able to enjoy our beautiful world.
Let me hear from you, Gloria.
Love,
