Today was Day 6 of the fire. We started out by seeing Pikes Peak for the first time in a few days. It was not hiding behind smoke from the day before. We had fires above Peregrine and the southern boundary of the Air Force Academy. Then the thunderstorm clouds gathered around noon (just like they used to!) and after the first scary lightening bolt, it seemed to settle down and just rain. Big ...smoke clouds gathered and left. Smoke still in the Academy area, but for the first time, the smell of smoke, the site of houses burning, fires flaring up, and just the utter despair of seeing this beautiful backdrop blackened was gone. The air started to get cleaner, the winds blew up but gentled back down. Thank you. Tonight folks were out walking in a bit of cleaner air, and everyone came out to see the sunset and be with friends. We lost 346 homes. Thousands have been evacuated, but tonight some of our west side neighbors were allowed to return again. They are still on pre-evacuation orders, but a lot of these folks have been gone since Saturday or Sunday. Welcome home. Lets keep that rain in the forecast. To all our dear friends who have expressed such care, kindness, and concern for us during these past few days before and during our evacuation during the Waldo Canyon Fire that raged.... and you know who you are!!!... we arrived home this morning to a home that was safe and sound. While not feeling totally comfortable as we watch the fire fighters still trying to put several fires out on the moun...tain to the west of us, we are living out of suitcases for a couple of days. But, so far so good. It isn't a joyful homecoming since we know several friends whose homes have been totally lost..... please continue to pray for them, for the family members of those who died during this fire, and for the brave people who continue to work to put out these fires!!

We live part-time in South Fork, so named because the South Fork of the Rio Grande joins up with the main river here in town. This little stretch of the South Fork is a 4-minute walk from our house. I've caught 20 trout here in an hour before. Today -- Three. As the old saying goes: The fishing was great, the catching just wasn't so good.

MINI REUNION 2012 (The Early Years)

On Saturday, June 23, 2012, 32 RoHawks and their spouses gathered at the River City Cafe in New Braunfels for a small reunion.  We enjoyed some BBQ and chocolate cake and a few drinks.  We looked over the old year books and Gloria's photo albums of the past reunions.  The Party started at 6pm and OMG everybody was gone by 9:30!!!!! No one was carried out drunker than Cooter Brown!  Lots different than the first reunion when we didn't want the night to end - some of us went to Mike Wysong's house for breakfast and didn't get home or to our hotels until early morning! The second and third reunions we retired to JIM'S for hours after not wanting to say good bye!  Has it really been almost 50 years when the Class of 1963 walked across the stage to get their diplomas? This year marks the 50th anniversary of Randolph High School itself.  There have been many changes to the school and to the football field.  It is bigger - but not by much! A separate entry gate was opened that goes directly to the school from outside the base constructed because of security.  Many days of our lives were spent on Randolph Air Force Base in the '60's and the base has been changed too - some of the quarters in the front of the base have been removed. Both of the places we lived in are gone!  But the Taj Mahal is still there - an icon burned in our memory banks forever. Lots of time was spent at the Youth Center, the Flight Line Snack Bar, the BX, Bowling Alley, walking the Octagon and at the Officer's Pool and RHS.  Moms and Dads cheering their sons and daughters in the many sports we participated in. Cheerleading - band concerts - plays - and I remember the scandal one particular play brought forth - "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" with Ed Burtenshaw - when he snapped his suspenders the censors reacted.....   We started having reunions in 1975 and had them every 5 years until September 2008.  I wrote a newsletter twice a year for 26 years! and for the past 12 years have kept this Blog active.  We have lost most of our parents and some of our friends and classmates - we collect Social Security and are eligible for Medicare. Some of us are healthy and some of us are not - we tried our best with our children and we are now enjoying our grandchildren! It's so hard to believe and it seems like only yesterday. 

Next year 2013 - we will have one last big reunion - so keep the second weekend in September open and please keep me advised of your new addresses and email addresses and phone numbers and look for further information. For now, the plans are to have the reunion at Jeff and Marty Lindley's house again - we promise to have more fans and LIGHTS.  We are hoping to make it a BIG EVENT - ONE YOU WILL REMEMBER ...

So, thank you for your continued interest in the school and interest in this Blog. Have a good year and we will hopefully see you next September 2013!!!
