STAN "CAL" SUMNER, Class of '64
Dear Ro-Hawks,
Just when you thought it was safe to come out and play This is your old classmate “64“ Stan Sumner, known as “CAL“ now Well I didn‘t make it to Broadway like some of you thought I should. The closest I got was a try-out for the opening of “HAIR‘ 1969, San Francisco.. I‘ve been living in San Antonio on and off since returning from my Navy days. I moved to Austin, Texas to finish my Nursing degree and practice at the Austin State Hospital (MHMR) through March 1983. To accommodate my artistic endeavors I maintained a close relationship with an Avant Grade, Post Grad. Art Association called the “Thursday Night Bridge Club”. We won a Honorable Mention for our film “Poor White Deco Trash” at the 1976 Texas Film Festival. The Same year and event that the “TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACAR” won top honors and went on to become one of Americas top Horror Film Classics.
Returning to San Antonio the spring of 1983 I fell into an old group of friends. They had just the year previous resurrected an old stage production “CORNYATION”. The defunct Fiesta entertainment originally presented by the San Antonio Little Theater was their money maker for years.
I had received a Darby from a friend who used it during productions of “CABARET” on Broadway in New York. I began festooning the hat with every sort of Fiesta memorabilia found, and donated. After designing stages, costumes, and helping with ticket sells for years I needed a new venue to prop up my depleted artistic juices. The company needed a ticket/crowd control person as the show had become one of Fiestas best attended events and unruly. Cornyation remains “SOLD OUT” every year. In the late 80s as the “OFFICIAL GREETER”, I began greeting attendees with the phrase, ‘CORNYATION MENU? “GOOD TASTE NOT INCLUDED”! 1990 Cornyation became an official Fiesta event. Every year some memento found its way onto the hat. By 1991 the DARBY was buried under a mountain of Fiesta memorabilia and resembled a Battle of Flowers parade float.
Dennis my brother and I left Cornyation in 1992 after sheer exhaustion. In 1993 we organized the “FIESTA HAT SOCIAL CLUB” at the King William Fair. The club members elected me their Fiesta Hat King in 1995. We began handing out Fiesta medals at the Opening of Fiesta that year. By 1997 we had become an expected feature at the opening of Fiesta. We were invited to the Kings Party at NIOSA by the San Antonio Conservation Society and returned every year since. From there with a little help from the local TV media and the Express-News our legend was disseminated. In 1998 the Fiesta San Antonio Commission elevated three new royals to their list of nine, King Anchovy, the Fiesta Hat King and the Piñata Queen.
In case some of you never got the opportunity to participate in Fiesta: Fiesta is a ten day celebration, every spring, in San Antonio, Texas celebrating the Texas Revolution (1836 - 1845) and honoring the heroes of the ALAMO and SAN JANCINTO.
I will be saying ADIOS to all my FIESTA FRIENDS during the 2007 Fiesta. Carole McRae/Richards and Randy Woods will be joining me in Alamo Plaza at 9AM sharp April 20th 2007 to start the last festivities. Any one in the San Antonio area then is welcome to join us for a real “FUN TIME”! There was also some news in my family this week. Here's a hospital picture of my latest grandchild. My fourth grandchild overall, she is the first child of my oldest son Richard and his wife Kathy. The other three belong to my second son, Scott.

On the other end of life, you may recall that I sent you an earlier e-mail earlier this month telling you that I had the privilege of going to the funeral service for Mrs Carolyn (Seago) Clay - widow of Col. Richard L. Clay and the mother of our classmate Babs and Babs' brother Rick. You may remember how impressed I was by that service:
"The minister gave one of the most meaningful sermons I've ever heard at a funeral. The chapel at the cemetery had the seats filled and people standing around the walls. There was a lot of community love shown for this family."
Babs e-mailed me a picture of her and me that was taken at Rick's house on the day of the funeral. I don't know that this photo is of interest for the web site, but I thought you might like to see how much kinder the years have been to her than to your balding, broadening, and bearded e-mail writer!
I was interested in Ron Bergquist's note about completing his PhD. Do you know what field of study he earned the degree in? I didn't see that information in his note. Just curious.
Gloria, I want to once again thank you for continuing to keep all of us far flung RHS alumni connected. As we continue to gain descendants and lose parents and classmates, I appreciate now, even more than I did in my "callow youth," the efforts you make keep us informed of life's passages - or "phases and stages" to use Willie Nelson's terminology.

RON BERGQUIST '64 (PhD)
Gloria,I saw your recent posts through your RSS feed. Looks like you all had a great time in Italy. My big news is that after years of ambling along, I finally finished my dissertation and was awarded my PhD in May. Just about the time I was thinking I was big stuff, I noticed an article in the AARP magazine about a 67 year old woman who was just starting her PhD program, living in the dorm and everything. I guess one is never too old. I have attached a photo taken at graduation. I am standing with a colleague and fellow newly minted PdD, Meredith Evans, and her sister's kids. My brother, David, surprised me by showing up in Chapel Hill to make sure I actually went through the ceremony. He had to then sprint back to Austin to see his daughter graduate from UT.

HI TO EVERYONE!! Here are a few pictures of us: One is of the entire clan together this past May when Reagan got home from Iraq. The picture was taken at Liberty Heights where Jeff's Dad was living at the time. He has since returned to Florida because he preferred to go back to his favorite state. The picture is (from left to right) my Mom, Jane Darling; Jeff's Dad, Andy Anderson; our youngest son, Reagan, Jeff, me, our oldest, Shaun and his wife, Trinity. Another picture is of Jeff taken last fall at Bear Lake in Estes Park, our favorite spot in Colorado. Picture of me was taken last fall when aspens were particularly gorgeous. This was taken at the top of Ute Pass, looking out towards South Park. We so enjoy being in Colorado (where I was born) and having the mountains up close and personal.
I spent a lot of time going through the blog and everyone's stuff. All I can say is "wow".... everyone looks terrific and lots of memories came flooding back. Randolph was a magic time in our lives...it is always remembered as the best. But, I have to admit that I still have trouble wrapping my head around Whizzie being the Pentagon chaplain (congrats Whiz!!!!!)...but Whiz was always one of favorite guys. Loved pics of JD's birthday party as he is always special to my heart. Mostly, glad he turned 60 before I do (I'm still the youngest of the class....)! Carol looks wonderful and Burgoon is still Burgoon. Everyone just looks grand. What a great group we all are!
Can't tell you what happened and why we lost track of you and everyone else, but glad to be "back in the fold" again and great to hear how everyone is doing!

We hit a bit of a rough spell this year and hope that 2007 is better. Jeff had quadruple heart bypass surgery on Valentine's Day (what a sweetheart!) but is doing very well. Reagan had second tour of Iraq but made it home safe So, all in all, we are all here, we are fairly healthy and we are together. Doesn't get much better than that.
Hope to hear from folks now that we are back together and hope that everyone has had a good summer.

JOHN LIEBERMAN, Class of '66
What have I done for the last 40 years? Well, let's see...
After RHS, I went to SAC to pursue a career in electronics. But I decided that I really wanted to be on the other side of the microphone. So, after getting my electronics degree, I moved to Houston to study broadcasting at Career Academy. (Thank you Jack Posey and my friends at KTSA!)
Just prior to that move, I also got married. In January of '70, I turned up #6 in the final Draft lottery and was drafted about a month later. I voluntarily joined the Air Force to avoid the Army and having to go to 'Nam. After Tech School in Biloxi, I spent time in Japan and Taiwan before returning to San Antonio for my final year at Medina.
During that last year in San Antonio, I was able to land a part-time announcing gig on what was then KEEZ-FM. (It’s now KJ-97) That turned into a full time news job the day I was discharged from the Air Force. Unfortunately, or fortunately - as the case may be - on that same day I caught my wife of 4-1/2 years cheating on me and that was the end of that. I've been divorced ever since. I did come very close to re-marrying about 15 years ago, but that never happened. As far as kids, I don't have any that I'm aware of!
Professionally, I moved from KEEZ in San Antonio (one of the first two Clear Channel stations) to KXXO/KMOD in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where I was the Assistant News Director, and then to All News KWBB in Wichita, Kansas, where I became News Director. From there, I moved to KWKH in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1977 and I've been here ever since. I was News Director at KWKH for 19+ years until the station was sold in August of ‘96. Now, through a series of consolidations, I'm News Director at News Radio 710 KEEL as well as KWKH and our other 4 Clear Channel Shreveport stations.
When I'm not on the air reporting the news, or out in the field chasing news stories, I'm heavily involved in the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) and have been for the past 20 years. I autocross a radically-modified 1965 Austin Mini every chance I get and I'm also active in the administrative side of keeping our sport as safe as possible - all the way up to the National level. I'm also heavily involved in my community - especially the Chamber of Commerce - and a number of other organizations.
So there, in a nutshell, is what I've been doing for the past 40 years. (3/2006)

RICK and KATHY DAILY NORTON Class of '66
Gloria - Thought I'd send a couple of pictures that you may want to add to the blog for any of the class of '66 to view. The second is of Rick (Norton) and Kathy (Dailey) and our oldest son Chris and his wife Heather. The first is Rick and our boys Chris, Matt and Ben. All our boys are married to great girls. We have one grandson named Tyler who will be 3 in October (Ben's son) and another grandson due in November (Matt's). I've really enjoyed seeing the pictures on the blog.

John Hines '64 and Whizzy Broome '65
John Hines and Whizzy Broome taken at Joanna Dyas Smith's funeral. Whizzy officiated her ceremony. John lives in Universal City now in his mom's old house on Boulder Drive. He works at the Home Depot in New Braunfels. Whizzy is now the Chaplain of the Pentagon - he speaks directly with a higher power which is NOT the President. Whiz said he is learning the ropes and finding his way around the Pentagon. He often rides his motorcycle to work.

Lewene Arliss (Lee) Hines of Universal City, Texas passed away peacefully on June 10, 2006, after being together with all of her children. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bill Hines and her brother, R.I. "Bud" Leeland. She is survived by her sons: John and his mate, Lana of Universal City; Paul and his wife, Peggy of Adkins; her daughters: Carol Ann Hoffman and her husband, Ken, of Kansas City, Mo; Deborah Echert of Bainbridge Island, WA; five grandchildren: Nicole Johnson; Travis and Ryan Echert; Susan and Sam Hines; one great-grandchild, Buddah Sequoia Echert; her sister Marj, and her husband, John Holt of Fargo, ND; and her sister-in-law Betty Leeland of Cedar Rapids, IA. Lee was born October 24, 1921 in Porter, MN to her beloved parents Sidney and Caroline Knutsen Leeland. She served her country honorably as a member of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. After traveling with her husband as an Air Force wife, their family settled in Universal City. A lifelong Lutheran, she was a charter member of Christ the King Church and an active member of the community. She retired at Randolph High School. The family wishes to give our sincere gratitude and appreciation to all of the compassionate and loving caretakers at Graceland Assisted Living in Garden Ridge and to the Odyssey Hospice Care. "Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies." Proverbs 31:10. Lee lived by her faith and died in Grace. Funeral services will be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Universal City, Texas at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 14, 2006. The interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 8:00 Tuesday evening at Colonial Funeral Home on Kitty Hawk Road in Universal City. Congratulations Whizzy! I love this blog thing. One day I will have to get up on the technology. I thought I would use the reply all button to update you guys on the fact that I went back to work full time, after taking a one year break with my consultancy. I am now the General Manager of the Intercontinental Toronto Centre. This is my 10th GM's job in my 5th country. My new email address is art_nigro@interconti.com so if you are headed North in the near future, come visit me. But, I would not come here in winter! This will do hell for my golf game but there are guys in my club in Williamsburg 20 years older than me beating my bu.. so what the heck, I have plenty of time to play golf later...God willing. Take care all, and I look forward to our next reunion. It will be a holy one with Whizzy around. Art

Adventist Selected as New Pentagon Chaplain

dventist chaplain Colonel William B. Broome, United States Army, currently the installation chaplain of Fort Sill in Oklahoma, has been selected to serve as Pentagon chaplain in Washington, D.C., beginning in June 2006. He will succeed Colonel Ralph G. Benson, who is retiring.
Broome is not new to the Washington area. In 2001, he served as assignment officer for the Office of the Chief of Chaplains at DACH-PER (Department of the Army, Chaplains, Personnel and Ecclesiastical Relations) at the Pentagon. He was promoted to Colonel and transferred to Fort Sill in 2003.
"I really want to bring the grace of God and the servanthood of Christ in love to the Pentagon," Broome told the Adventist Review. "Of course, that has to be done in a pluralistic environment."
When asked what he foresees as the greatest challenge of serving as Pentagon chaplain, he said, "Trying to bring God's vision of forgiveness, compassion, and prophecy to a building that will comprise virtually every faith group that exists."
Broome began his Army career 38 years ago in Infantry Basic Training at Fort Polk, Louisiana. After graduating from Rotary Wing Flight School at Fort Wolters, Texas, and Fort Rucker, Alabama, he was sent to Vietnam and was based in Chu Lai in the I Corps region. After returning from Vietnam in 1970, Broome attended Southern Adventist University in Tennessee, graduating in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion. He received a Master of Divinity degree from the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary in Michigan in 1976. After serving as a church pastor in the Georgia-Cumberland Conference, Broome again entered active duty service as an Army chaplain in 1982. In 1989, he received his Master of Science degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Kansas State University, and helped initiate several innovative counseling and teaching approaches for families of soldiers deployed as part of Desert Storm during the American-Iraqi war.
"Throughout my career as an Army aviator, minister, and Army chaplain, I have had the privilege to serve people in combat situations, counseling sessions, seminars on marriage and family issues, and provided spiritual fitness leadership to soldiers and families," Broome said when explaining how his background has helped prepare him for his new position. "I have also spent hours in supervision to countless chaplains, which will, no doubt, help me minister to the nation's military leaders in the Pentagon."
Broome was near the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, when terrorists deliberately crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the building, killing 125 people in the Pentagon and 59 passengers and crew onboard the plane. He said he raced to the building and stood ready to rescue any remaining wounded. Broome, along with other military personnel and pastors from various church denominations, also provided pastoral care for survivors and families of the victims throughout that difficult day. A new memorial chapel has been constructed on the crash site.
"Ministering to the victims and survivors of the Pentagon attack was a surreal experience," said Broome. "I never imagined I would spend a day and night ministering to the nation's military leaders while watching a portion of the E-ring* burn and collapse."
Broome's new responsibilities will include supporting the spiritual well-being of the Pentagon's nearly 25,000 military and civilian personnel through worship services, religious education opportunities, and pastoral care programs and activities.
Broome is married to Alexa Lee Truax, a registered nurse, certified weight-management consultant, and personal weight trainer. They have two adult daughters and four grandchildren.
*The Pentagon, which is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense in Washington, D.C., consists of five concentric pentagons of corridors and offices, with the designation of "rings" and labeled "A" through "E." These rings are interconnected and enable employees to walk to other sections without going outside. The E-ring is the Pentagon's outer ring, where the hijacked aircraft hit the building.
