Guys, this was a funeral I did last Friday (May 25, 2007) at Arlington for a pilot I flew with in Nam, he was lost in 1970 and his remains were finally recovered and he was sent home, I knew him and he often came to my room to talk, good guy. His whole family and a lot of other people came out, very nicely done. Lets remember all our military does for us each day, and pray for them, blessings, Whiz

COLLEGE BUDDIES - Post RHS

ANDY LOWERY, JOHN HINES, DENNIS BIANCHI

Gloria---Just for the sake of accuracy, I should probably make a couple of clarifications to your caption (info) to the picture that I sent you. John was in a fraternity at SWT; I was in another at Southwestern University (full name - Phi Delta Theta.) I don't remember if Dennis was in a fraternity. The picture was taken at Dennis' house in Houston (where the 3 of us were living at the time.) I don't remember the exact year it was taken, but it was probably sometime in the late '80's. A side note - Dennis' house was built for him by John Hartig. It was a beautiful home in the western part of Houston. Thanks,
Andy

SKYDIVING 2007

Guess what I did? On May 16, 2007 I went skydiving.... I know.... I actually jumped out of a perfectly good airplane. I did it with my sister-in-law to celebrate our birthdays. She turned 50 a few days before and i'll be 60 in July and we've talked about doing this for years and darn it, she remembered!!! We jumped over Sabastian, Florida with the inlet and the ocean below us - the view was really breathtaking. It was really a blast - I'm thinking I need to do it again -- this time I would enjoy it more because I would know what to expect.... however, as the days go by my sanity is slowly coming back. Love you guys, Gloria '65 gutsking@aol.com

A FEW THINGS TO PONDER - SMILE

Here are a few things to think about while you are sitting there ..if you know the answers to these questions...pass them to me...

Can you cry under water ?

How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated... instead of just murdered ?

Why do you have to "put your two cents in".. but it's only a "penny for your thoughts ?" Where's that extra penny going to ?

Once you're in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity ?

Why does a round pizza come in a square box?

What SORT OF disease did THE cured ham actually have ?

How is it that we put A man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?

Why is it that people say they "slept like a baby" when babies wake up like.... every two hours ?

If a deaf person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing ?

Why are you IN a movie, but you're ON TV?

Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground ?

Why do doctors leave the room while you change ? They're going to see you BUTT naked anyway.

Why is "bra" singular and "panties" plural ?

Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat?

If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a stupid, DIPPY song about him ?

Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane ?

If the professor on Gilligan's Island can make a radio out of a coconut, why can't he fix a SMALL hole in a boat?

Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours? aREN'T THEY both dogs ??

If Wiley E. Coyote had enough money to buy all that ACME crap, why didn't he just buy dinner..?

If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from...?

If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons ?

Does the
Alphabet song
and
Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star
have the same tune?

Why ON EARTH did you just try singing OR HUMMING the two songs above?

Why do they call it an asteroid when it's outside the hemisphere, but call it a hemorroid when it's in your butt?

Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride he sticks his head out the window?

Friends,

Today is the 65th anniversary of the remarkable raid led by then-Lt Col "Jimmy" Doolittle (later General James H. Doolittle). Of the 80 men who launched their B-25s from an aircraft carrier to bomb Japan just four months after Pearl Harbor, only 14 are left today. Half of them were able to travel here to San Antonio for the annual gathering of the Doolittle Raiders. A few newspapers have written stories about the raid this week, and some of those articles are linked here.

http://aimpoints.hq.af.mil/display.cfm?id=18101

Yesterday, the 80 goblets that represent the 80 men who launched on that mission arrived at Randolph Air Force Base from their permanent place of honor at the National Museum of the Air Force near Dayton, Ohio. (Years ago, the goblets were on display at the Air Force Academy and I used to regularly walk by and scan the names on them. However, the Doolittle Raiders "belong" to the Nation as a whole so it is appropriate that the goblets are now in Dayton where they can be seen by the tens of thousands of visitors who stop there to learn about our Air Force and its heritage and heroes.) Four of the Raiders were on hand for the arrival of the goblets and to hear the 12th Flying Training Wing Commander thank them for the courage they showed six and a half decades ago in a legendary attack that bolstered the morale of our Nation while embarrassing the empire that committed the Pearl Harbor aggression.

Yesterday, I shook the hands of four veterans - Richard E. Cole (Doolittle's co-pilot on Crew 1, the first plane into the air on the raid), David J. Thatcher (Crew 7, gunner), Thomas C. Griffin (Crew 9, Navigator, later POW in Germany for two years), and Robert L. Hite (Crew 16, co-pilot, Japanese POW for three and a half years ). I thanked each of them for their service. I know that some of you also do that for today's service members and veterans. Some of you served yourself or were a family member of someone who was in the military. God bless you for that. On this day of remembrance of the Doolittle Raid, may God continue to bless this great Nation and those who serve us in the Armed Forces and other instruments of national power and community service.

Regards,

Jerry Ball '65

Someone asked me at dinner if I was still making quilts....lots of baby quilts lately, but did put a small quilt in the Capitol Quilt Show in Denver....I have attached pictures of the show...my quilt is the red and black one. Thought you would enjoy seeing this very great show we do every other year. We have over 200 quilts hanging this year. All quilts made in Colorado.Shots are taken from all three floors of the Capitol building, with a shot of the dome. The building was totally renovated and dome redone the past 2-3 years...it is a beautiful building with inside all done in pink/grey/black Colorado granite and marble. Enjoy! Jackie Darling Anderson

Thank you Note from Jackie and Jeff

Heh girlfriend!
What a great night we all had on Saturday! Jeff and I were so glad that they changed our flight (even if the coming home flight was totally messed up!!) and we could surprise you all! What fun! It was just terrific to see everyone again and to catch up on everyone's life.I have attached pictures from my camera...not too many since my side was too busy smooching and laughing and talking too much...as we always do!!

And, I think we all agree, that we would all like to have the magic time machine information from Sandy that transported her from 1964 to Saturday night, looking even better than before and younger!!!

Sitting and watching all these folks brought back a flood of memories for me and for Jeff too. We had to travel to Randolph AFB the next day so we could soak it all up again! Got to visit my old house (now occupied by a very nice Major and his family) and to see the pool (no more high board) and great new raised deck area (I still miss great fries at the snack bar....), and of course, to see the Taj Mahal.

Thank you again for putting this all together and getting us all out for a fun night. Much love to you all and I promise to keep in touch better than before!!

xxxoooJackie

2007 DINNER AT THE BARN DOOR!

Dear Ro-Hawks!

Jeff Anderson ('63) and Jackie (Darling '64) Anderson contacted me and asked me to have another get together at The Barn Door because they were going to be visiting San Antonio from Colorado in April. We planned and planned and made reservations, got confirmations, etc. Then the day before the planned dinner I got a call from Jackie that a big snow storm was coming their way and their flight was cancelled!!!! We still met for dinner on April 14th at The Barn Door without them and we were all bummed. However, right after we ordered our dinner we look up and there are Jeff and Jackie!!! The storm wasn't as bad, and they caught a flight and wanted to surprise us. THAT THEY DID!!! We had a wonderful time eating and catching up on old times. However, the night was not all wonderful as 3 or 4 automobiles were broken into in the parking lot, including Bill Borellis's car. No one was hurt but some windows were smashed and valuables taken, including Bill's golf clubs!!! Here are the pictures from that night. Remember, no one was hurt during the taking of these pictures! (Click on the link below and scroll down to the pictures - you can click on the individual pictures or click on "view album as a slideshow")

P.S. Jeff and Jackie - thank you for the Rocky Mountain Candy.... I was able to get the cellophane off with my teeth (why are they packed so good?) while driving home and talking on my cell phone ..... I ate about 4 of them. The next day my mom ate the rest. Needless to say, yum yum

DATE TO REMEMBER FOR NEXT GET TOGETHER. WRITE THIS ON YOUR CALENDAR. JUNE 2ND.... More details to follow soon.

Love you guys, Gloria

RAMBLINGS OF A RETIRED MIND

Ramblings of a Retired Mind
- some thoughts.

I was thinking about how a status symbol of today is those cell phones that everyone has clipped onto their belt or purse. I can't afford one. So, I'm wearing my garage door opener.

You know, I spent a fortune on deodorant before I realized that people didn't like me anyway.

I was thinking that women should put pictures of missing husbands on beer cans!

I was thinking about old age and decided that old age is 'when you still have something on the ball, but you are just too tired to bounce it.'I thought about making a fitness movie, for folks my age, and call it "Pumping Rust."

I have gotten that dreaded furniture disease. That's when your chest is falling into your drawers!

I know, when people see a cat's litter box, they always say, "Oh, have you got a cat?" Just once I want to say, "No, it's for company!"

Employment application blanks always ask 'who is to be notified in case of an emergency.' I think you should write, "A Good Doctor!"

Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the Post Office? What are we supposed to do -- write to these men? Why don't they just put their pictures on the postage stamps so the mailmen could look for them while they deliver the mail? Or better yet, arrest them while they are taking their pictures!

I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older. Then, it dawned on me, they were cramming for their finals.

As for me, I'm just hoping God grades on the curve.

AGING IS FUNNY! RIGHT?

As we think and try to remember....

RHS CURRENT UIL ACADEMIC COMPETITON

Gloria,

I wanted to make sure you're aware of the successes of our alma mater in the UIL academic competition last week. This year was a bumper crop of medalists.

Check out this site:

http://utdirect.utexas.edu/uil/vlcp_results.WBX?s_year=2007&s_meet_abbr=SPM&s_gender=&s_level_id=D&s_level_nbr=29&s_conference=2A&s_area_zone=&s_submit_sw=X

Select Current Issues and hit GO. You'll see the team did very well - they fully expect to go back to state and possibly win. This is a fickle event but you never know...

Select Science and hit GO. RoHawk Adam Cribb picked up the individual overall gold, individual chemistry gold, individual physics gold (these results are at the bottom). They think the team can make it to state - the girl who won the biology gold is also from Randolph.

Select Social Studies and hit GO. This is the team's weakest event - they're just hoping for a good showing at regional.

Also, select Accounting and hit GO. As you can see, a completely different Randolph team made it to regional.

What's nice about this is the quantity of kids of Randolph that are bringing home medals and going on the regional! One of the parents remarked that "success breeds success". Two years ago, only a couple Randolph kids went to region, and Adam Cribb was the first to go to state in the last several years - but last year they took the entire current events team to state.

BTW, Adam also has earned eight varsity athletic letters at RHS. Four in cross-country and four in track.

I am so proud of these young people who are currently walking the halls we walked so long ago. Thought you might be proud of them also.

Jerry

A SALUTE TO A FRIEND by Jerry Ball

A salute to Dexter Florence on what would have been his 60th birthday

My Friends,

About two months ago, I shared with you some of my angst of aging upon reaching my 60th birthday. I told you that I took off work that day just to be alone with my thoughts and ended up at the National Museum of the Pacific War. Seeing the exhibits there reminded me of many men of that era who never lived to be old. Then I started reflecting on our own generation and, particularly, of some who served with me in Vietnam.

Today, I have been thinking of Dex Florence and John Matthews from my Vietnam days. Today, March 27, 2007, would have been Dex’s 60th birthday.

Dexter Bush Florence flew Loach helicopters in Vietnam. Small in stature, he was as big as anybody when he strapped into his bird. There are men alive today who would not be had Dex not done his duty and then some. A college classmate of Dex, John was a member of the ultrasecret MACSOG group whose special operations activities carried them to many parts of Southeast Asia. (John was nicknamed “Bart” because some of the guys thought he resembled a Bartlett pear.) One October Sunday in 1972, Dex, Bart and I were in Saigon eating French onion soup, quaffing brews, and generally giving each other a ration of grief about each of our unit’s contribution to the war effort. (Not unlike the gibes tossed back and forth in the locker rooms of Pat Conroy’s book, My Losing Season, which I highly recommend to military brats, especially those who played basketball.) Before that week was out, Dex was dead – the victim of a command detonated explosive that took down his helicopter and left him to sear from the flames until death mercifully released him from the pain three days later. The official report reports it this way: “On 26 October 1972 1LT Dexter Bush Florence, pilot, and SSG Keven Zane Goodno, observer, were on a scout mission in an OH-6A Loach. While hovering at tree-top level, a command-detonated mine blew the OH-6 out of the air. SSG Goodno was killed instantly, while 1LT Florence was seriously injured. He was evacuated to Japan where he died on 29 October of injuries received.”

Should you ever pass by the little town of Arkadelphia, Arkansas and see the small airfield there named Florence Field, give a nod to a great American whose hometown gave the honor of naming their aerial link to the world after their native son.

Before the year of 1972 was out, Bart was on a classified mission that went bad. Badly wounded, he was medevaced out of country. Eventually, he ended up back home at the veterans hospital in Little Rock, not far from his home. He earned a Purple Heart and a medical discharge. I visited him in 1973 or 1974, but now I don’t know where he is. Or if.

Of the three of us at that meal in Saigon, only I came back undamaged from the war. A sobering thought.

So in these closing moments of March 27, 2007, I wanted to note Dex’s 60th birthday. Thanks for letting me share this salute with you. God bless the friends of my youth – those who are gone and those who live on.

Jerry

GRANDKIDS SAY THE DARNEST THINGS

Grand Kids say the darndest things

My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, "62." He was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, "Did you start at 1?"
********************
After putting her grandchildren to bed, a grandmother changed into old slacks and a droopy blouse and proceeded to wash her hair. As she heard the children getting more and more rambunctious, her patience grew thin. At last she threw a towel around her head and stormed into their room, putting them back to bed with stern warnings. As she left the room, she heard the three-year-old say with a trembling voice, "Who was THAT?"
********************
A grandmother was telling her little granddaughter what her own childhood was like: "We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods." The little girl was wide-eyed, taking this in. At last she said, "I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!"
********************
My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?" I mentally polished my halo while I asked, "No, how are we alike?" "You're both old," he replied.
********************
A little girl was diligently pounding away on her grandfather's word processor. She told him she was writing a story. "What's it about?" he asked. "I don't know," she replied. "I can't read."
********************
I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me, and always she was correct. But it was fun for me, so I continued. At last she headed for the door, saying sagely, "Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of these yourself!"
********************
When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's no use, Grandpa. The mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights."
********************
When my grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, "I'm not sure." "Look in your underwear, Grandma," he advised. "Mine says I'm four to six."
********************
A second grader came home from school and said to her grandmother, "Grandma, guess what? We learned how to make babies today." The grandmother, more than a little surprised, tried to keep her cool. "That's interesting," she said, "How do you make babies?" "It's simple," replied the girl. "You just change 'y' to 'i' and add 'es'"
********************
Children's Logic: "Give me a sentence about a public servant," said a teacher. The small boy wrote: "The fireman came down the ladder pregnant." The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. "Don't you know what pregnant means?" she asked. Sure," said the young boy confidently. "It means carrying a child."
********************
A nursery school teacher was delivering a station wagon full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started discussing the dog's duties. They use him to keep crowds back, "said one youngster. "No, said another, "he's just for good luck." A third child brought the argument to a close. "They use the dogs", she said firmly, "to find the fire hydrant."
********************
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.

WHICH GENERATION ARE YOU?

WHICH GENERATION ARE YOU?

"Hey Mom," one of my kids asked the other day,
"What was your favorite fast food when you were growing up?"

"We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,"
I informed him. "Allthe food was slow."

"C'mon, seriously. Where did you eat?"

"It was a place called 'at home,'" I explained.

"Grandma cooked everyday and when Grandpa got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it."

By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table.

But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it:

Some parents NEVER
owned their own house, wore Levi's, set foot on a golf course, traveled out of the country or had a credit card. In their later years they had something called a revolving charge card. The card was good only at Sears Roebuck. Or maybe it was Sears AND Roebuck. Either way, there is no Roebuck anymore. Maybe he died.

My parents never drove me to soccer practice. This was mostly because we never had heard of soccer. I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed, (slow). We didn't have a television in our house until I was 11, but my grandparents had one before that. It was, of course, black and white, but they bought a piece of colored plastic to cover the screen. The top third was blue, like the sky, and the bottom third was green, like grass. The middle third was red. It was perfect for programs that had scenes of fire trucks riding across someone's lawn on a sunny day. Some people had a lens taped to the front of the TV to make the picture look larger.

I was 13 before I tasted my first pizza, it was called "pizza pie. "When I bit into it, I burned the roof of my mouth and the cheese slid off, swung down, plastered itself against my chin and burned that, too. It's still the best pizza I ever had.

I never had a telephone in my room. The only phone in the house was in the living room and it was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn't know weren't already using the line.

Pizzas were not delivered to our home. But milk was.

All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers. I delivered a newspaper, six days a week. It cost 7 cents a paper, of which I got to keep 2 cents. I had to get up at 4 AM every morning. On Saturday, I had to collect the 42 cents from my customers. My favorite customers were the ones who gave me 50 cents and told me to keep the change. My least favorite customers were the ones who seemed to never be home on collection day.

Movie stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the movies. Touching someone else's tongue with yours was called French kissing and they didn't do that in movies. I don't know what they did in French movies. French movies were dirty and we weren't allowed to see them.

If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren. Just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing.

Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it?

MEMORIES from a friend: My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house (she died in December)and he brought me an old Royal Crown Cola bottle. In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it. I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea. She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to "sprinkle" clothes with because we didn't have steam irons. Man, I am old.

How many do you remember?

Head lights dimmer switches on the floor.
Ignition switches on the dashboard.
Heaters mounted on the inside of the fire wall.
Real ice boxes.
Pant leg clips for bicycles without chain guards.
Soldering irons you heat on a gas burner.
Using hand signals for cars without turn signals.
Dad removing klinkers every night from our coal burning furnace.
Calling for a friend, with your voice, at their door rather than using the bell.
Mail delivery twice daily, morning and afternoon.
Jumping rope with neighborhood kids after SUPPER.
Automatic diswasher?.....I don't think so....!

These pictures were submitted by Janet Watkins Jendron '65. We know who the cheerleaders are: Carol Hines, Janet Watkins and Becky Mahr. But who are the people lined up on the stage after the play "My Sister Elieen"? Please post your answers below..... (I'll give you a hint - one is my ex-husband).

Jackie and Jeff 2007

National Park (my favorite place on earth), another of the park on a much calmer Sunday, and the Rockies on the day we arrived during big wind storm! Yowee!See you next month! We are really looking forward to seeing you!xoxoJackie

Gloria in Hawaii - February 2007

These are just a few of the pictures I took in Hawaii. Joyce Molick Adkins '66 met me and my girlfriend Marianne in Honolulu on Saturday and took us along the east coast and showed us some of the neat sites including "Eternity Beach" here. Joyce has lived in Hawaii for 5 years now and is getting ready to move back to the mainland soon. Marianne and I are celebrating our 60th birthdays.
