November 11 - A Look Back

This blog was born exactly one year ago on Veterans Day 2010, inspired by a simple visit to my Dad that same morning at the retirement complex where he was living. He had asked me to bring over his Purple Heart medal to wear on his VFW vest for the the local Veterans Day ceremony. There was never a Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, or any other patriotic anything which he did not formally honor. He was 86, a retired pilot with more than 30 years' service in his beloved Air Force.

And already here we are looking at Veterans Day 2011. Hard for me to believe, but as we get older we're always saying how fast time goes by. I will be going to visit Daddy again this Veterans Day morning, not to bring him his Purple Heart medal this time, but instead to bring him a fresh new U.S. flag where he now resides, at the National Cemetery of Dallas. He is surrounded by hundreds of brothers and sisters in that beautiful place, just as he wished. The funeral with full military honors is an experience that no one who has ever attended could forget. It was a beautiful and cool sunny day, with hundreds of bright U.S. flags lining the roads of the place, the wind just right to fully show them off to perfection, making it an even more unforgettable experience, felt in the deepest part of the heart. Right there next to how very much we miss him.

It is still hard to believe how much things have changed in one year's time, but that is just how life is for us all. One of the good things that has happened in that space of time is that I have been privileged to write about our veterans, and so many of you have shared this blog with your friends, for which I am very grateful and humbled, as was Dad. One thing that hasn't changed is the courage and commitment of our veterans that continues on and on still today. You and I are being guarded and protected right this moment, every minute around the clock, by these very people we don't even know. Just in this moment, I hope you will think about how amazing that is.

Dad wanted me to continue writing this, so I want to try to express to you what I think he would want to say. I do know that he wanted people to know the meaning of Veterans Day. He reminded me often that it was originally named "Armistice Day," marking the end of World War I, and the day when his own father, then an Army medic at the bloody Battle of the Argonne, knew he would at last be returning home to marry my grandmother.

He wanted people to know the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day. They are set apart for different reasons which aren't clear to everyone. Personally I always appreciate how our citizens do consistently honor our veterans, even if they don't always get the days quite right.

But the distinction was important to him, as it should be, so I want to pass this along on his behalf. It troubled him when people thought of Memorial Day in particular as just primarily another party holiday for cookouts and drinking beer. He liked to party and have cookouts just like anyone else; but for him Memorial Day was not a party day. It was a sacred day, set aside to honor our fallen soldiers, and has been expanded to honor all our loved ones who are now gone. In contrast, today, Veterans Day is a day of tribute to all veterans, not only those who died in service. The bond they share is a deep and abiding one.

And it's not as if they liked war. They saw horrors they will never want to bring back to mind, stories they will take to the grave. But they also know there are even worse things than the fight.

There's an old beat-up plaque that Daddy has had hanging on the wall here forever. Its inscription is one you have probably read before:

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight - nothing he cares about more than his own personal safety - is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."

Thank you and God bless you, veterans. So long as the heart of this nation beats, you will never, never be forgotten.

Our local contact is Dot Roberts (Jeanne Roberts Stinson's mom). She sent this note:

December 10th at 11:00 am (East Coast is Noon) there is a ceremony at all National Cemeteries and wreaths are placed on as many graves as possible.. You can sponsor a wreath to be put on any grave and/or you can designate a wreath to be put on a particular grave site and I'll see that it is placed there, if you can't attend the ceremony yourself. The wreaths are $15.00 and you can contribute as much as you want.

If you are interested, send checks to me Dot Roberts -327 Forrest Trail, Universal City, TX 78148, made out to "Wreaths Across America" and I will take it from there. And if you know of anyone else that might be interested, please give them the information. I know there are many in the 'Ro-Hawk' family that have loved ones at Ft Sam and might be interested in the program.

Please make sure the checks are made payable to "Wreaths Across America". The deadline for getting them to Mrs. Roberts is November 18th.

If you want to have a wreath put on a particular site please send along a note with your check specifying the name and location in the cemetery. If you don't know the location - please put the name on the check or a note with the check and Mrs. Roberts will look it up. If you want to join them and other families just drop Jeanne an email to let her and her mom know that you are going to be there and you will be able to lay a wreath on your loved one's grave and lay other wreaths as needed.

The ceremony is held to coincide with the ceremony in DC which is being held at Noon (Eastern Time) (ours is at 11:00 am Central Time, etc.) across the country. The ceremony at Ft. Sam is being held at the Pavillions at the back of the back section of the cemetery at Ft. Sam .... There are seats provided but you will have to arrive early to get a good seat. Your participation is appreciated.

Good morning everyone. I wanted to share this with you this morning. It is a short but very powerful video about 9/11. But for me what makes it very special is that my little sister; I say "little" but she is a Ph.D. at MUSC Psychology. Anyway, she is the one who produced and put this video together along with the video staff at MUSC. She found all the speakers and set up the stem questions and they filmed over the course of a week. What is also amazing is that she was able to find speakers that were there in NYC that day, and all but one are now a part of the MUSC staff. Some of you know my sister from our early school days in Texas; some of you know her from here in Charleston and some of you do not know her at all. But she is my little sister and I am so proud of her today. Watch this video and be moved.

RICK NORTON '66 - Senior Olympian!!!

Just competed in National Sr. Olympic's triathlon in Houston this past weekend and wanted to share. Had one of those rare days when everything flowed. After a good swim and bike found myself 90 secs behind the leader. Slowly made up ground on the run and ended up 8 secs behind him; finished in 2nd place with a silver metal. Very cool event. Reconnected with many athletes from the last Nationals in San Francisco. I will be putting the competition on the back shelf for a while to recover and get some body parts well. Although that 8 seconds will stay on my mind for a while. In the back of my mind is competing internationally in 2013 as a youngster in the 65-69 age group. I would just encourage everyone to maintain as active a lifestyle as they can! Best Wishes to all. Rick Norton - Class of '66

A small get together was held at the home of Michael Wysong in San Antonio. Larry Tucker was the cook (yum). Unfortunately, several local people couldn't make it but we had fun talking about "old times" ... Football and Basketball stories mostly. Good food, oldies music and friendship. I wanted to send these links to you because I thought you’re one of the people I know that would appreciate this. My dad is 86 now, and doing pretty well, but of course, we never know how much longer. He has always kept pretty quiet about his World War II experiences, since a lot of it was pretty painful (he was shot down in France and was a POW for much of the war). Recently he has started opening up and relating some of his stories, and my sister decided to get it all down for others to read, and she has posted one of these stories (in two parts) on her blog. What is "HOME"?

Every time I get asked “where are you from?” I have to hesitate. Sometimes, I say – Louisiana - because that’s where I was born. I only lived there two and a half years. Then my brother was born and we were transferred to Illinois. From there we moved “all over”. You know what I mean. Sometimes, I answer, “well, I was born in Louisiana, but my dad was in the Air Force, so we moved a lot. I lived in Texas more than anywhere else, so I guess, Texas”. Very confusing. My parents had a home and my kids have a place they call home.

Wikipedia defines “home” as

“A home is a place of residence or refuge.[1] When it refers to a building, it is usually a place in which an individual or a family can rest and store personal property. Most modern-day households contain sanitary facilities and a means of preparing food. Animals have their own homes as well, either living in the wild or in a domesticated environment. "Home" is also used to refer to the geographical area (whether it be a suburb, town, city or country) in which a person grew up or feels they belong, or it can refer to to the native habitat of a wild animal. As an alternative to the definition of "home" as a physical locale, home may be perceived to have no physical definition--instead, home may relate instead to a mental or emotional state of refuge or comfort. There are cultures in which members lack permanent homes, such as with nomadic people.”

I guess we were nomads.

Religion is complicated also – What religion are you? I always said “Protestant” – I went to the Protestant services at the Chapel on base, right? I really didn’t realize that Protestant contained several religions for a long time. I guess I’m “multi-religional”. I married a Catholic, divorced, married a Lutheran, got a religious annulment and converted to Catholic and then started going to Protestant services again. I miss the Chapel!!!!

I left Texas with my first husband in 1972 – I spent 31 years in Florida. I never liked it there. I felt alone and alien. I never realized how much I missed Texas – or how different Florida was as compared to Texas – the people, the culture, the fact that I wasn’t near an Air Force base and there were no military people around. I met and married my second husband, Danny, in Boca Raton, Florida. He moved there when he was 2 years old and lived in the same house for 20 years. Who does that? I thought I was stuck in South Florida forever. When the opportunity to move back to Texas presented itself I held my breath. I didn’t believe it was true. You can never go home – right? Well, I guess I didn’t think I was returning to my home because I don’t have one, right? I’m a nomad. I spent 31 years of my life in a place I didn’t really like – but I made a ton of friends, I had a career, had another son – had a life. I lived there longer than anywhere else. I even lived in a house for more than 2 ½ years!!! I even stopped moving furniture!!

One day shortly after I moved back here I was driving down I-35 on my way from New Braunfels to Air Force Village – south of San Antonio, near Lackland AFB, where my parents lived. I’m nearing the exit to Randolph AFB and I look up and I see jets flying overhead. I saw another set of jets right behind them and they flew over me as I was driving. My eyes started burning and tears started flowing – I was HOME.

I still don’t know what to say when people ask where I’m from or what religion I practice. I do know that I feel like this is my home and I do believe in God. So I must be from here.

I have really enjoyed the great work you do and the time and effort that you put into the Ro-Hawk Blog. It is a pity that someone had to take advantage of the system and destroy the ability of others to communicate due to their unnecessary comments.

I was inspired by the article entitled “A Soldier Died Today”. As you know Patty and I have been going back to Vietnam since 1989. I had the privilege to serve this country as a Ranger on the ground and as an Army Aviator. Vietnam was not very popular, but many men and women answered the call and served this country well. They were our peers who came from the Randolph Ro-Hawks and Schertz Cibolo High. “Our Cause Was A Just Cause” We carried out our school spirit, and the banner of our country to help free another country from communist aggression. It was not a question if it was right or wrong. We answered the call. Some of our brothers, sisters, fathers, aunts, and uncles, did not come home, and their sacrifice was not in vain just as the men and women who serve our country today here and abroad.

Patty and I often conduct the communion service for the veterans that travel back with us each summer. I have attached what I wrote for the 2002 Journey Back Service. It has been said that real soldiers stand together.

It is with this truth in mind that I write you this letter.

The life of a soldier is one that few understand. That life will change you.

You learn that life, as a soldier is one that brings about a unique family.

A family that does everything together.

You survived boot camp together. You go to chow together. You laugh and sing and drink... together.

In the quiet moments, you speak of home and of those you

Love...together.

On the battlefield where death and destruction are ever present; you protect one

Another; you bleed for one another; and you weep for one another... and in time you come to love one another as brothers.

As a soldier you live by a different standard. You live by different words.

Words such as "Siemper Fi" Always faithful. The Para-rescue units live by the

Words "That others May Live". Honor and Duty.

The Rangers have a code. "Complete the mission, though I be the lone survivor" and never leave a

fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy."

I wanted you to know that I have been your sacrifice.

When you were standing the night watch, I was with you.

When you were pinned down by the enemy; I was there;

When your strength was giving out, and your courage almost gone;

Danny and I went on a motorcycle ride up to Dripping Springs to visit Janet Francis Murillo ('64) and her husband Ray. We enjoyed a Mexican breakfast in Johnson City and then we were on our way back home to New Braunfels. I took the close up pictures with my cell phone - I guess not the safest thing....

John Hines ('64) and his brother, Paul worked on this all day yesterday. Paul is going to place it on his property which is near Universal City, TX - I wanted it for my yard but the HOA rejected it.

The art part was Paul's creation. He put together those 6 sides of some cable reels together to form that sphere, which is 11 foot tall. They each had 6 spokes. It was unique, but Peggy (Paul's wife) said that wasn't going to be in her back yard. the peace symbols was what he could come up with, with what he had to work with. We had to cut out the middle hub and cut/weld the connecting pieces to make the peace symbol. It was a good day. Not finished. More welding to do. Then prime it an paint it, all white, as we speak He is going to set it upon a 10 or 12 foot pole on his new piece of property. Might try to get Willie to have a concert out there.

I just received my electronic version of The Afterburner(http://www.retirees.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-100920-010.pdf), news for retired personnel. The thing that caught my eye was the article on page 7, "Bases get new names in realignment".

Let me quote one particular part:

Seven bases received new names in January: ... Lackland and Randolph Air Force bases and Fort Sam Houston, Texas, became Joint Base San Antonio, led by the Air Force

Wow, Randolph is now part to Joint Base San Antonio. Fort Sam is now part of Joint Base San Antonio.

I know I'm just an old geezer, but I don't think I am going to feel comfortable using that new nomenclature. I guess this is part of the long running Goldwater-Nichols (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldwater%E2%80%93Nichols_Act) saga to make a more coherent, joint force. It looks like it has been in the works for a while since Fort Lewis-McChord AFB have been "have been preparing for joint basing since 2006".

Ah, well, I guess I just have to get used to change.

JUST A COMMON SOLDIER

(A Soldier Died Today)

He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion, telling stories of the past.
Of a war that he had fought in and the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies; they were heroes, every one.

And tho' sometimes, to his neighbors, his tales became a joke,
All his Legion buddies listened, for they knew whereof he spoke.
But we'll hear his tales no longer for old Bill has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer, for a soldier died today.

He will not be mourned by many, just his children and his wife,
For he lived an ordinary and quite uneventful life.
Held a job and raised a family, quietly going his own way,
And the world won't note his passing, though a soldier died today.

When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing and proclaim that they were great.
Papers tell their whole life stories, from the time that they were young,
But the passing of a soldier goes unnoticed and unsung.

Is the greatest contribution to the welfare of our land
A guy who breaks his promises and cons his fellow man?
Or the ordinary fellow who, in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his Country and offers up his life?

A politician's stipend and the style in which he lives
Are sometimes disproportionate to the service that he gives.
While the ordinary soldier, who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal and perhaps, a pension small.

It's so easy to forget them for it was so long ago,
That the old Bills of our Country went to battle, but we know
It was not the politicians, with their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom that our Country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger, with your enemies at hand,
Would you want a politician with his ever-shifting stand?
Or would you prefer a soldier, who has sworn to defend
His home, his kin and Country and would fight until the end?

He was just a common soldier and his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us we may need his like again.
For when countries are in conflict, then we find the soldier's part
Is to clean up all the troubles that the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honor while he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage at the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline in a paper that would say,
Our Country is in mourning, for a soldier died today.

Some of you may know about this but I thought it would bear repeating... Coach Don Scott was a basketball coach at RHS from 1967-1990. He's written a book that sounds really interesting... Here is the information and his email and information on where to order it:
"My book A Basketball Coach In A Football State relates my 33 yrs coaching and teaching in Texas. Beginning in Beeville in 1957, one year at Churchill SA and 23 years at RHS. It is not a normal jock book. The main idea is problems I encountered with athletic directors who were also head football coaches. It is however much more than that. Classroom stories of biology and driver ed, small town Texas in the 50's and 60's, big city adventures, basketball, football are a few of the events mentioned. There are stories of desperation to inspiration. The good,the bad,and the ulgy is incluced. At the last Rohawk Reunion the book sales were teriffic! I am headed to the East Texas Book Festival in Tyer this weeked. It is a professionally prepared book.

I was waitin’ in room 315, Brook Army Medical Center, Sep 09, 2010, for my daughter and 4 yo grandson Lucas, who were enroute to pick me up after my release from a 10 day hospital stay due to my accident. I dozed, drifting lazily into light sleep, and had a delicious dream,,,,,,

As TJ, Lucas and I were crossing the BAMC lobby, we encountered a young soldier, with two stubbs where his legs used to be, expertly maneuvering his wheelchair through the throngs. He was flanked by a pert young woman with a very young child in her arms. My Lucas asked me, “Grandpa, why does that man have no legs?” I didn’t even have to think, I told him, “Because he loves YOU, Lucas!” You could see the thoughts revolving inside his 4 year old head, and he released my hand, crossed to the soldier and bear hugged his stump. The man was obviously embarrassed and full of wonderment at the actions of my small grandson. Lucas looked him directly in the eyes and stated emphatically, “I love you too!!!!!”

It had started as just another day, usual stuff around the house, post on FB before getting into chores, dismantle the toilet so I knew what parts I need to get, 10am found me in flip flops and boxers. I stuffed on my jeans, boots and a shirt, still don’t remember which shirt it was but it’s history now. Hit the road with the defective toilet lever in the fairing pocket. It was a nice morning, not hot yet but will be by the time I get home. Down to the end of Gin Rd, left, then back right onto Horseshoe Tr. Just puttin’ along, one of those days where you wonder whether you really deserved to live this well or not,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Slow for the left hand 90, smooth accel back to 50 or so, not too much, right hand 90 coming up, slow, check out the motion in the road. So, what gives? Somethin in the road ahead. In a flurry of movement, 3 turkey buzzards, downshift, rap the pipes (cause that usually urges ‘em on), already rollin’ slow cause of the sharp turn, but not usin’ the speedo now, payin’ attention, the birds flap off listlessly to the right, no, the third bird’s goin’ left, s’rite, they’re leavin’, a little throttle, down to second and “SHIT”, left bird hangs a ueey and spins around after his buds, DIRECTLY at me, lean low on the bike, off the gas again, then WHAM, a virtual hammer blow to my left upper chest as the bird lifts me out of my seat, bike out of my hands, another ‘wham’ as I encounter the pavement,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Prob never will know the exact order of impact, nobody there but me and the three birds, bruises all the way from my left outer knee to my middle left back, not much for bruises elsewhere, no road rash on my skull, only one tremendous gash all the way down to the bone. But everywhere else, forehead, nose, cheeks, both shoulders, both elbows, both forearms, both hands, both thumbs, all eight fist knuckles, but only the right index finger and left little finger, go figure,,,,,,,,,,,

Vision comes back with an extreme closeup of the dirt, I stand and see the blood splashing onto my feet, toilet parts and my glasses lens are in the road, bike is 50 yds further up, on the right shoulder, down but not twisted, retrieve my parts and put ‘em back in the fairing pocket.

Now a pickup truck, ‘911?’, he asks, and I respond, ‘no, I don’t think so’, another truck, bigger one, from the other direction, he’s already on the phone,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I don’t remember the little details of ambulance, DPS, them cutting’ my clothes off. No real pain, no real blackness, just nothingness, then a moment of clarity, I’m being loaded into the chopper, look down and see Scott, “Hey Scott, buddy!” Wanna ask how his son Dillon’s doing, but I’m blank on Dillons name. Watch the comical recognition come over Scotts’ face as he shifts gears from one of the best LifeFlight attendants around to my friend, whos’ young son and my daughter bonded as she was nannying her way through college, nothingness again,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Here’s the weird part, I took some kind of LSD trip or some such, no history of drugs to use for comparision, on drugs and endorphins I guess. Supposedly an overdose of drugs that some folks are more sensitive to than others are. I may never know the answer to that one either, but folks tell me I was WAY out of it, loud, abusive, determined to die, way more trouble than those fine medical professionals deserved that night, for sure. I was enough of a problem they drugged me to keep me restrained, whatever Serax is.

I had two collapsed lungs, 6 rib fractures, three abdominal drain tubes, and have a really cool scar on my head, but guess what, no headache. Hmmm

I seem to have experienced multiple ‘textbook’ recovery/reaction to treatments, with multiple regression/reintensifications of my injuries. I dunno why, but over all, I’m feelin’ a little better each day

I remember Debbie and my daughter bein’ there almost constantly, my son flew in from Seattle, Miss Joni graced me with her presence, and Mac McCabe came by with a bag of homemade chocolate chippies.

Second hand info says I was out of it all night Tues and all thru Wed, though I supposedly looked well enough on Wed day they were considering releasing me, till I fell ‘off the wagon’ again. No, Billy and Worth, I didn’t quit drinkin’ on purpose, but a ‘pain ball’ (left paraspinous muscles catheter) did make me dislike the taste of beer, lol. I went back and forth on Thurs, and was kept on the ventilator for 2 days. They moved me to a ward on Sunday, and things kept improving until Tues when I coughed and blew a hole in my left chest. That generated a generous supply of icky, sticky, gooey red stuff. Not blood, kinda looked like fingernail polish, exciting but not serious, ‘cept, I s’pose, it was serious for the linen ladies. Sorry girls.

So, now I’m home, with an ever increasing awe of the medical professionals.

Did ya ever stop to wonder how the mess hall can feed that many folks, in a building built like a labyrinth, cater to their whims and preferences, and do it in as timely a manner and with such a degree of efficiency and quality. I actually like hospital food, on the overall.

Learnin’ about the love of friends and family? Now, that’s another thing altogether. Y’all are a fine bunch of folks, and I’ll lay down my life for any of ya. Thanx for the love and prayers, not necessarily in that order. See ya on the road.

Friends, I was driving this rental truck on Saturday, 14Aug, when I was cut off and left the road and down a steep decline and into the woods. The whole right side of the truck is torn off and the engine is pushed back to the cab. Our dog was sleeping beside me and when we finally stopped h gave me THAT look! We were coming back from Florida with some furniture and things from Alexa's father's estate. Unfortunately, her father died suddenly before we could take him back to live with us. God has saved my life many times that are only possible thru His divine care. I am humbled and thankful as I know He has a ministry for me here. It is my prayer that each of you evaluate your relationship with Jesus and commit to follow His voice in these troubled end times.

Some of our fellow Rohawks live near their grandchildren and see them frequently. Probably most are like me and live at a distance.

Over the past thirty days, I have been able to see my oldest granddaughter (who lives in Colorado), my second oldest (who lives in North Carolina), and my other two granddaughters (who live in Virginia). Since seeing all of my grandchildren within one month is a rarity for me, I thought I'd share the pictures with you.

I want to thank you for having me on your email list. I am broken hearted that I will not be able to make the reunion this year. If it was in August, I would be there wirth bells on my toes. I graduated class of 68. I went to school as Robert H Newlon and was most noted for my stuttering. My stepfather never legally changed my name, so after graduating, I went back to my real name...Robert H Smith, and I go by Rob. As for stuttering, I don't..in fact I am a salesman and do not hesitate to walk into businesses I have never been in and sell. I love it

I lived on Randolph AFB at 11A 3rd St East, a duplex. Patty Hale was my next door neighbor. I always wondered about all of the Air Force Brats and what happened to them. I now live in a place called Deer Valley in the East Mountains outside of Albuquerque on five acres of what I consider close to paradise. I attached two pictures of about the same view...hot and cold. Maybe I will send some more recent pictures later.

Having a wonderful time in Peru! A beautiful country, and very nice people. We've been to Lima and now I'm in Cusco~the capital of the Incas. Bill left yesterday with our friends to begin a five day Trek to the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu(and hiking and campling at 14,000 feet!), where I will meet up with them on Thursday. We spent a couple of days exploring the Sacred Valley, a magnificent and breathtaking landscape. It has been the trip of a lifetime.

GLORIA AND DANNY'S ROME VACATION - MAY 2010

This is a slide show of our trip to Rome in May.... we traveled with one of my best friends (from Florida). We had a great time. We knew we were in for some excitement when Judi texted us and told us that she had gone to the Palm Beach airport instead of the Ft. Lauderdale airport BUT she was able to make it back to Ft. Lauderdale (where she lives) in time for her flight. However, she checked her carry-on bag to save time not realizing that she was left with only her passport and ticket. When we got to Rome her carry-on bag was not there ... it was returned to our apartment in three days - minus her camera and phone. Judi and I really drove Danny crazy but in the end and on the last day of our visit he brought us flowers for Mother's Day. Then we made it to the airport with hours to spare... boarded the plane only to be told that we had a 3 hour delay because of the volcano!!! Then were told that we also were going to detour above Iceland and over Greenland and down over Canada --- adding 3 hours to our flight!!!! We made it to Atlanta only to find out that everyone missed their connections. So we stayed overnight in Atlanta. We were really really glad to get home the next day!!! Hope you enjoy.... I'm doing great. In late April, I will be an invited guest at the largest telescope in the world, the GTC in the Canary Islands. It's a long story, but the short version is that I am friends with several people in the U. of Fla. Astronomy Department. I am on its "Advisory Council." Last summer I was a guest at the inauguration of the GTC telescope (UF is a partner with Spain in the project), and got to meet the King and Queen of Spain (!!!). Now, one of the astronomers is going back in April to start up his project on the telescope, a sensitive infrared camera (it weighs 200 lbs.) to seek out earth-like planets around distant stars. He has asked me to come as a member of his team with the title of "historian," which means I'll be taking photos of the scientists as they work. I'll be living on top of the mountain where the observatory sits as part of the scientific team. So, after all these years, my lifelong dream of being an astronomer is at least partially going to be fulfilled!

My daughter, Allison, invited me to come to visit her in Florida to help celebrate her 41st birthday. Chuck and Lyn also joined us ... Here are some of the pictures taken at Disney and Epcot. I also stayed 3 days with my best friend, Cindy who lives in Deltona - we went to New Smyrna Beach and met another good friend, Kitty. (I went to school with both of them in Virginia - Lee High School, Springfield, VA - '63). Allison wore a button that said Happy Birthday Allison and she also got me one to wear (even tho my birthday is July 8th).. Everyone in both parks (any staff if they see the button) yells out HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALLISON - HAPPY BIRTHDAY GLORIA (or whomever). It was fun. Lyn didn't like the attention and was embarrassed by all the fuss. Allison and I loved it - maybe because we are exhibitionists?

You are absolutely not going to believe this!!! I found this newsletter when we moved to our new house recently --- It's a newsletter from the Randolph Youth Center dated September 1961. I hope you can see it - Just check out the names --- Mrs. O'Brien for one - remember her (Lovie O'Brien - Carole and Jimmy's mom - she was always there watching over us)... I know this will bring back memories or our fun times at the Youth Center. I remember one night we went outside and waited because someone said the world was coming to an end that night! Local inventor to sell Micro Mixer on QVC

Jeff Lindley, jlindley@satx.rr.com would often lay awake at night, determined to devise a mechanical solution to a problem he had with his microwave.For many years, he saw a need for some way to equalize the distribution of heat from microwaves into the food put into a microwave without having to change anything about the function of the microwave itself. “You go to heat up soup and its always boiling on the top and room temperature on the inside,” said Lindley, a general construction contractor in New Braunfels. Finally, the idea came to him. A simple, stationary mixer that utilizes the movement of any microwave turntable to mix any liquid or semi-liquid food, thus better distributing the heat.He invented the Micro Mixer, a mixing utensil that sticks to the ceiling of a microwave using a simple suction cup. The Mixer stays stationary. It’s the bowl that moves as the turntable spins, mixing the contents of a bowl as it turns in the microwave. The mixer is made of heat resistant rubber.Later this month, Lindley will head to Philadelphia for acting lessons to prepare him for an appearance on the cable home shopping channel QVC. “It’s the idea that sells it,” he said. “QVC will probably sell them for $15.95, plus shipping and handling.”The road has been a long one for Lindley to get this product to market. First, there was the problem with paying for a mold to manufacture the mixer.“People tell me China is the cheapest way to go, and I also tried places in California and back east,” he said, but found the best solution was minutes away from New Braunfels at Stellar Plastics, Inc. in San Marcos, a company that was able to produce the mold at nearly half the cost of Chinese manufacturers. “So, now, not only is this invented locally, it’s made locally in San Marcos,” Lindley said.The next step was to find a way to sell it. Wal-Mart, Target and Bed Bath and Beyond will not take finished products as single items. Instead, they prefer manufacturers to have a whole product line to go with their brand name. He even tried a spot on the reality television show “Everyday Edisons,” and narrowly lost in the finals to go on the show in Atlanta. “They didn’t want anyone with a completed product already, they are more interested in finding people with a design,” he said. He also produced a commercial for it, but ran out of money in production to get it on the air. (See the commercial online at www.micromixer.com.) Finally, he found a QVC representative, and she convinced the channel to bring the Micro Mixer to its audience.Lindley will be on the air in January — a date and time has not been set. “It’s an obsession of mine,” Lindley said. “I’m not going to give up on this thing.”

I’m back in the islands preparing for the new charter season here in the islands in hopes that world economic issues do not impact business in as drastic a fashion as they did last year. With the upcoming season comes the unending list of projects to bring the boat, Silver Moon, into charter-ready condition which is no small task let me tell you.

“But,” you may gasp, “Cap’n Bob, it has been so very long since we last heard a peep out of you…. what in the world has been going on with you?” I thought you’d never ask…. and perhaps you never would have, but when has your disinterest ever deterred me from speaking my piece in one of these infrequent missives?

The past charter season wrapped up for me in late August. It had been a good first effort for Silver Moon and, all in all, we came out of things feeling pretty positive about the boat and our ability to deliver an excellent product at a very competitive rate. This next season, no longer the new kid in the neighborhood, we go up on those rates by a nice chunk, which hopefully will translate to a more attractive business for the owners. After securing Silver Moon in a protected marina on Tortola I headed to Texas for some much needed R&R.

As we approached San Antonio for landing, the dry and parched scene below shocked me. On the taxi ride to town I got to feeling like I was in Arizona what with dead grass, cracked dirt where grass used to grow, dying or dead shrubbery, livestock that preferred to just lay around rather than eat that dried out crap….geez, did I get off in the wrong city? I had certainly expected dry, but it was much worse than I had pictured.

Some of you may not have known that I have been suffering a bit from arthritis in my hips over the past year. I doubt many of you didn’t know because I’m a disgusting whiner and have taken all opportunity to expunge sympathy from everybody I’m in contact with. I am not a good sick person…not a good employee either, but that’s another story. Hey, the cartilage in my hips has long gone and I’m bone on bone and that my friends is not how it is supposed to go down. Sorry, I digress in self-aggrandizement. The short story is that I chose to fly down to Costa Rica where I had the ball and socket joint on my port side removed and replaced with titanium hardware The entire adventure was a success and I’m now walking upright without a cane like a modern man rather some Neanderthal beast of burden. That was a big part of what I’ve been up to over the past two and a half months. Post surgery I spent with my wonderfully supportive parents at the lake house on Canyon Lake and about ten days with my marvelous daughter and her crew in Keller just north of Fort Worth. Being surrounded by loving arms was huge in the healing process.

And then there was rain. I left dry and parched central Texas to arrive in the throes of the rainy season in San Jose, Costa Rica…. and I was not disappointed…. rain it did. Most days were replete with hours of steady, cool, wet, soothing rain. Upon my return to Texas, well what do you know, it started raining and we had some really wonderful afternoon showers with my dad’s rain gauge showing 5 inches after one two day period. Lo and behold, the parched earth came to life with long hidden wild flowers poking their noses up to grab some sun, livestock got up during the day to graze on green, succulent grasses and everything responded like you wouldn’t believe. Green… verde…verdant. Oh it was nice.

But after ten weeks stateside it was good to be back in the tropics, on the water, in the wind. Thankfully no drastic weather came through these hills while I was gone and Silver Moon was in fine fiddle when I arrived except for the gnarly growth of mildew and mold throughout the interior and a dinghy that was flat as a flitter (am I the only one who uses that term?…and what the heck is a flitter?). I’ve spent the past week addressing those issues and now it’s time to get her Bristol for the upcoming yacht show where charter brokers from around the globe come for meet and greet time with boats and crews. My best island friend and buddy Mary will be joining me as chef/mate on all charters this season so no more single handed gigs where I sail, cook, wine and dine ‘em all by my lonesome. We do well as a team and I’m confident that it will translate to increased business and profitability for all.

As I write this I’m sitting in the main salon, the western horizon has risen to hide the sun leaving the sky is ablaze in color, the 5:30 pm ferry to St. John just left the dock with three long somber blasts of his horn and a gentle breeze is coming in through the open hatch. Beans and rice for dinner, I’ll be in bed by 9. I do like it out on the water folks.

While in the states I’m always taken aback when sales clerks, waiters and folks on the federal payroll at the post office smile as they provide assistance and thank me for my business. It just sets me back a bit. “Why?” you might ask. Here in the islands, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands anyway, one is almost never thanked for one’s business patronage. We get in the habit of thanking them…. to which they respond with a “you’re welcome.” I don’t know if it peeves others around here like it does me - I’ve not really brought this subject up with others - but get this...I’m here to hand over to you my very hard-earned dinero, to support this business, your job and your family, to put food in your dog’s dish…and I’m thanking you? And you have the nerve to, without so much as a smile or often even eye contact, to tell me I’m welcome? I know this sounds like such a petty issue to those of you who live in a world of retail, of consumerism, of stuff, a world of competitive struggle, but it has become a big deal with me. The BVI office of tourism spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on consulting studies of how to improve their image, how to grow their economy and I can save them some of that money with this simple concept….learn to say thank you to those who make your job your livelihood.
I’ve decided…. no more thank you’s from the ole capitan when the stream should be running down hill if you get my drift.

But to those of you who have been supportive of my craziness through the years, who have offered a place to stay to a wayward sailor running from the storm, who put up with my cigars for so many years, who prayed for me when I was laid up in a Spanish- speaking hospital with a heart that had decided to go wicky wacky, who smile and tap their foot to my sometimes not-so-steady beat…. you know who you are…to you I just want to say a heart felt “thank you.” No, no…. thank you!

Gloria,

Two weeks ago, my oldest son Richard and his family flew down from Virginia to visit for a week. My daughter Janna drove over from Houston and, of course, Daniel lives with us. On Saturday afternoon, Richard and his wife Kathy said they were headed out to Starbucks for some coffee, but they really went to the airport and brought my second son Scott back to spend the weekend. It was a total surprise. It was the first time I had all four of my "kids" together since 2001.
This shot was taken at my parents' house. In the back row are my parents, Kathy, Richard, Janna, and Scott. In the front row are my sister Janet (RHS '67), Daniel, Richard and Kathy's daughter Ava sitting on Calla's lap, and me.

I think you met Richard, Kathy, Janna, and Daniel when you came to my retirement worship service.

Interestingly, I hadn't told my parents in advance that Richard, Kathy, and Ava were coming so when we arrived at their house I asked Mom if it was a surprise. She said, "Well, not really. I saw on Richard's Facebook page that he had bought tickets for Texas, so I figured we'd see him soon." I hadn't known that Mom did Facebook!

Graduated class of '66 at Randolph High. Went on to attend the University of Hawaii, but lasted only a few weeks as I met my husband to be the second day after I arrived in Hawaii in June. We were married in February of '67 in Michigan (I was too young for Ohio). Five pregnancies from eighteen to twenty-three and three beautiful children. We will celebrate our 43rd anniversary this February! Worked for the Erie County Clerk of Courts for almost nineteen years (fifteen as supervisor of the Erie County Auto Title Department). Had to retire ten years ago with a medical retirement and have just been taking it one day at a time since. That's my life since graduation in a nutshell. Hope I didn't bore anyone.

I got to travel with my sister Janet (RHS, '67) to Fort Benning, GA this month to give the oath of office to Jan's daughter Lori Montgomery as Lori graduated from Officer Candidate School. I also swore Lori into the Army in 2003 when she enlisted so this was a special treat to be asked to participate again.

This picture was taken right after I administered the oath next to the flagpole. I was signing the paperwork while now-2Lt Montgomery beamed in the background.

I am so proud of her - and all the men and women who wear "the Nation's cloth."

Forty years ago this weekend, I was at the Woodstock concert, and now I am getting alarmed about all the retrospectives. They’re beginning to make me feel like Frank Buckles, the 108-year-old last surviving veteran of World War I. Although I will never come up with a line as good as Frank’s secret to a long life. (“When you start to die, don’t.”)

Also, it has brought back my concern about the fact that I do not have any memory whatsoever of having heard any music. Woodstock-wise, I am the walking definition of anhedonia.

I spent a lot of time trying to talk a state policeman into helping me charge the battery on the car I had borrowed from my boyfriend. And, having left the picnic basket behind on the front porch, I was in charge of finding food for myself, my brother and the six friends who came with us. This took a great deal of time, and involved making my way to a little town down the road, where the store shelves had been stripped nearly bare and the people seemed to feel as if they were living out an episode of “The Twilight Zone.”

Fortunately, it turned out that eight people could live on peanut butter and marshmallow fluff for much longer than you might imagine.

But it was still a great adventure. The lesson I took away from it is that whenever anybody asks you to do something off the wall, you should really try to do it — unless it involves being unethical or a two-plane connection. You might not enjoy it while it’s going on, but somewhere down the line the anecdotes will always come in handy.

When I was actually at Woodstock, it never occurred to me anybody was going to want to discuss it 40 years down the road. In fact, the only time I envisioned the concert having any impact on my future was on the way home when I decided all of us were going to die in a massive traffic jam.

It was already dark when a girl walked up to my car — which was easy to approach, since we hadn’t moved for several hours — and said something like: “All the people ahead are going to sleep, so you might as well just settle down for the night.”

Then she gave me a flower and walked away. This was a sweet gesture, but I was so overwhelmed by the wish that the flower was, say, a saltine cracker, that I didn’t really respond.

As the hours slowly ticked by, I decided that the cars were never going to move again — and that months later rescuers would find our desiccated bodies, some collapsed behind the wheel, others slumped over the glove compartment where they expired while searching for a stray cough drop.

I fantasized that this mass tragedy would cause all the people over 30 to regret the terrible way that they had ignored the wise advice that the younger generation had been offering on how to run the world. Then the much-discussed revolution would finally occur, the world would achieve peace and harmony and we would be remembered as the Woodstock Martyrs who made it all happen.

Or, you know, we might just decide to get out of the cars and walk.

The Woodstock-mania must drive young people crazy since it is yet another reminder that the baby-boom generation is never going to stop talking about the stuff it did, and that when they are old themselves there will probably still be some 108-year-old telling them how everybody slept in the mud but that it was worth it because Janis Joplin sounded so awesome and the people were all mellow.

Current younger generation, I know you would be equally good-natured if you found yourself stranded in the middle of nowhere, cut off from the world with 400,000 other people and a bunch of bands. But it will never happen because although you will have many, many fine adventures of your own, you will never be cut off.

My sister-in-law Laura just got back from the Lollapalooza concert in Chicago, which was the exact opposite of Woodstock in the sense that it was an extremely pleasant way for a middle-aged person to spend a weekend.

The thing that struck her most — besides the misting tents, the lobster corndogs and the truffled popcorn — was that “at any point you could look around and 50 percent of the people were texting or reading a text. Which is fine for keeping in touch, but I wonder how truly involved you can get with the music.”

As the person who went to Woodstock and didn’t see the concert, I can’t really comment on that last point. But 40 years ago, I knew eight people who would have killed for that lobster corndog.

The airplanes in the attached video are all airplanes like the one I just built & fly. I watched this as it was taking place over Oshkosh Air Adventure 2009. It makes me very proud that I could build & fly and airplane of this caliber.

Hi, Gloria,

Took a little trip to Colorado to get away from the Texas heat. We drank a couple glasses of wine and decided to go to the top of the mountain on horse back for dinner even though we don't ride! At the end of the night we thought we were Roy Rogers and Dale Evans!

Small world! As we were leaving the Denver airport we ran into Bill B. and Mike W.! Should have taken pics but were trying to catch the plane!

LIEBERMAN, BOWERMAN and BUEKER

John Lieberman came to visit his mom and dad in San Antonio and asked me to facilitate a lunch for him and try to find a few of his friends.... voila! (the only French I know after two years of French). Lunch at Macaroni Grille in Selma.

These guys hadn't seen each other in 42 years! First we found Jeff Bowerman who had been hiding in Schertz all these years. Jeff '66 married Jan Bueker '67 forty years ago. Jeff enlisted in the Air Force right after graduating high school. He eventually became an air traffic controller and was actually stationed at Randolph for 7 years. Jeff was medically discharged after 22 years. Jan (a nurse who works at the VA Hospital in San Antonio in the spinal cord injury ward) and Jeff have 2 sons and 6 grandchildren. Through Jeff and Jan we found Jan's brother, Bob Bueker '66 and his wife Terese (a retired oil and gas analyst) who have also been married 40 years. Bob graduated from Texas A&M as an architect and is semi retired. Bob and Terese live in Houston, have one daughter and 3 grandsons. We spent 2 hours catching up and taking pictures. Many thanks to Kathy and Linda for being there ... and for being very dear friends and thanks to John for notifying me of his trip here from Shreveport, La where he resides. WOW! What a great gathering. I can't thank you enough, Gloria, for helping to put this together. It was the first time I'd seen Jeff since our mini-reunion at the Officers' Club back in '85 and the first time I'd seen Bob and Jan since Graduation in '66. It was great to see you and Kathy and Linda again, too, after our big gathering in New Braunfels last September. I'm hoping to make it home again somewhere around Thanksgiving. I'll let you know as plans come together. Maybe we can do it again -- with a few more additions! 8<{)John Lieberman

I am elated to have made contact with a few of my fellow Ro-Hawks and begin to reconstruct some of the past, the memories of which I have misplaced somewhere in my addled brain. I have little capacity to recall past events by my own efforts, but the recall of others seems to stimulate my ability to recall those specific areas of loss. In a way it's a little funny - I didn't lose any limbs or organs in the wreck, but I did lose portions of my memory.

I am looking forward to the next get together and will stay in touch.
